Designing active and imaginative projects for our 4th and 5th grade students at Benentt Elementary School means activating our own bodies and imaginations through play and experimentation with simple materials. 

During our Friday morning classroom sessions at The Boulevard House in Southwest Detroit, Stamps Students were given prompts to create imaginative structures out of simple cardboard and wood pieces.

Alter our experience of the room using the cardboard disks. How many different ways can you do it?

While their 4th grade partners had the day off school, Students in Nick Tobier's Detroit Connections: Active Classrooms course started getting to know the neighborhood of Southwest Detroit by becoming active participants in its culture and art organizations. 

First, a walking tour of the east end of the neighborhood. As the weather gets warmer, we'll work our way west - exploring Southwest Detroit via it's main street, Vernor Hwy.

Then, a dance class with Kimberley, a teaching artist with Living Arts Detroit, that focused on activating imaginations by thinking through art & design principles with your body. We made positive & negative shapes in space, moved with texture, and drew with our bodies.
