Turn based combat has to have an engaging gimmick to be fun. For Mario RPGs it's action commands. For earthbound (and maybe other mother games but I haven't played them yet) it's rolling HP and the guts mechanic. For Undertale it's the option to kill or spare. For Chrono Trigger it's the cool animations with the techs. There is no cool gimmick for final fantasy's combat, (or at least the first one) so I was too bored to finish it.

  Guys respond better to action commands than vague suggestions.  For example, you'll get a lot more bang for your buck if you say "I'd like my present on my actual birthday," instead of "I wish you would be more respectful of my expectations."  Huh?  Also, when approaching the subject it's best to do it casually (you know, be cool about it), and be positive and encouraging (so he doesn't feel threatened).  Have a discussion as opposed to lecturing. Â
