Talking to Avery about December and about advent calendars. According to this Mental Floss article, they were first printed in the early 1900′s, so I like to think that Avery just sorta didn’t know about them, instead of being too old to have known about them.
I mean, that’s what happened with me! I was an adult before I ever heard of an advent calendar! But I DID have access to a lot of candy as a kid. So, uh, no complaints there.

“Baguette” and “ballet” are French words, and “latte” is an Italian one. Lattes have been mentioned in English works as far back as 1867, so my guess is that Avery doesn’t literally mean that the word didn’t exist. Just that he lived in a rural enough area that such things weren’t really mentioned. You know, because he was a real salt of the Earth kind of guy. Proud of his real American roots! None of that fancy elitist liberal crap for him!
