From my perspective, this is the year the 1960s truly begins in the Billboard charts. By which I mean we're seeing the staples of the previous decade start to fade in favor for trends that will come to mark this new one, seen with the influx of teen idols, girl groups, and the flood of dance crazes. The Twist charted again this year, two years after its last appearance in the Billboard year-end charts.
MinĂĄlunk, keresztyĂ©nföldĂ©n Ăgy mennek a mennivalĂłk! Isten ĂĄldĂĄsĂĄval! (1966)
Bernard Stanley âAckerâ Bilk (1929-2014) was a jazz clarinettist renowned for for his svelte on stage appearance of goatee, bowler hat and waistcoat designed by his manager to gain him acceptance. âAckerâ means âfriendâ in his native somerset, not only was he only the second english star to top the US charts with âStranger On The Shoreâ in 1962 (after Vera Lynn a decade earlier) he was still charting as a guest on Van Morrisonâs albums forty years later as you may read here. Â

soft vine-ish video 3/? [Graham Coxon]
song: Acker Bilk - Stranger on the shore
I was talking to a young RNZ reporter about cider, she hadnât heard of Acker Bilk, the clarinetist famous for his hit Stranger on the Shore. Less well known for his interest in cider. Whilst finding her a link I came across a cider song of his. Recorded with Norman Candler Strings, an early form of Phil Spectorâs âwall of soundâ with lots of strings! I hadnât heard of them but my parents would have, they were very successful Easy Listening music which was popular in their era. Sadly history can be lost in time over generations đą. But interestingly I see Shazam an Apple Music discovery app had a remastered version. đ
