A Wrinkle in Time and A Circle of Quiet by Madeleine L'Engle

I am reading Madeline L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time" while simultaneously reading her book "A Circle of Quiet". What a joy it is to be with her again. It's like crossing a wrinkle of time, reaching out, and feeling connected to someone I've never met, but have known for a long time. I read her works while at Drew University. Jeff, my husband, was working on his PhD, and I was working at Exxon Office Systems.

I felt like Drew's campus was a dark forest compared to the brightness we had left living by the beach in California. I hated working at Exxon. It left me deflated and depressed about work.

Then I had an operation to remove cysts from my ovaries. It seemed to take forever to feel normal again. I probably would never have left our little apartment if a friend had not insisted.

My doctor counseled me to try to become pregnant right away because, due to the operation, it could take years for me to get pregnant. It took a week! Thank you, Dr. Walk. That was, of course, a wonderful thing. However, my husband was at the dissertation stage -- 80 pages written -- when the basis for his paper (liberation theology) and Marxism changed radically. And a baby was born.

Madeline L'Engle saw me through all of this with her circle of quiet. I wrote her a letter thanking her for her warmth and wisdom. She wrote me back. I lost the letter, but I never lost her. Through "A Wrinkle of Time" and "A Circle of Quiet" she has come back to me!
