Characters are from A Cure for Eternity, a story of magic, love, and what it means to be human.
For @writerofwriting‘s prompt thing
“What, you’re going as a vampire?” Olivia asked, raising an eyebrow. Hattie frowned, smoothing out her black dress. As costumes go, Hattie’s was pretty simple- red cape, black dress, combat boots, and fangs.
“What, you don’t like it?” She asked.
“It’s a fine costume,” Olivia said, “it’s just- isn’t it a bit obvious?”
“What good is being a creature of the night if you can’t exploit it on the one night of the year when everyone wants to be a creature of the night?” Hattie flashed her fangs- her real fangs- in a menacing grin.
Olivia was saved from replying when Morgan walked in. She was wearing a green velvet dress and carrying a pointed witch hat.
“Happy Halloween,” she greeted, hugging Olivia.
“You're a witch,” Olivia observed, hugging her back.
“It’s taken you this long to figure it out?” Morgan teased. Olivia rolled her eyes.
“I swear, I’m hanging out with the least creative supernatural beings ever. You couldn’t even go for Hermione Granger or something?”
Hattie rolled her eyes. “Whatever, Jonah’ll be here soon and he’s dressed as some superhero.”
“Good,” Olivia said, “I don’t want my party to be dominated by vampires.”
“It’ll be dominated by vampires anyway,” Hattie reminded her, “better hope none of your guests go missing.”
Olivia gasped, hitting Hattie’s shoulder. “Not funny! You’d better not kill my guests!”
Hattie laughed.
“What are you supposed to be, anyway?” Morgan asked Olivia.
“Bill Potts,” Olivia said, “Doctor Who?”
“So you’re just British Teenager?” Hattie asked, eyeing Olivia’s striped tank top and jeans.
“Yes, but I'm not actually British,” Olivia said, “so it’s a good costume.”
Jonah came in a few minutes later with his boyfriend, dressed as Batman and Superman, and the two of them got to quick work fixing Olivia’s decorations.
“Superman has saved the day again,” Jonah said, climbing down from Olivia’s couch after re-hanging the Jack-o-lantern string lights.
“You couldn’t take your shoes off first?” Olivia asked. Jonah frowned down at the shoe prints on the couch.
“Sorry, Liv.”
“I didn’t stand on any furniture, Olivia,” Jaimie assured her, looping an arm around Jonah’s shoulder. “Hey! Bill Potts!”
“I like this one,” Olivia said, “he can stay.”
“What about me?” Jonah asked, frowning.
“I’m kicking you out,” Olivia said.
“You can’t do that! My favorite sister lives here!” He argued.
“Hattie, can I kick your brother out?” Olivia asked.
“I wish you would,” Hattie said.
“E tu, Harriett?” Jonah gasped, placing a hand over his heart.
“Give me one good reason you should stay,” she said.
The siblings didn’t look much alike, both adopted, but they shared the same dangerous glint in their dark eyes. That glint was there in full force now, a challenge.
“I brought movies,” Jonah said, unzipping his backpack. “What We Do in the Shadows.”
Hattie gasped and grabbed the movie out of Jonah’s hand.
“You can stay.”
“Why do you like that stupid vampire movie so much?” Morgan asked. She had retreated into the kitchen to eat Halloween candy after the boys had arrived, and was now sitting in the counter and organizing an impressive pile of fun-sized wrappers.
“First of all, Morgan, What We Do in the Shadows isn’t stupid, it’s a masterpiece. Second of all, you watch human movies all the time and I don’t complain!” Hattie argued.
“You complain literally all the time,” Morgan said, “about everything. Including What We Do in the Shadows, by the way.”
“Okay, that’s a lie,” Hattie said, hugging the movie case to her chest. “I have never complained about anything in my whole life.”
“I find that hard to believe, seeing as you are 150 years old,” Jonah said. “And also because I lived with you for like 30 of those years and I know you love to complain about shit.”
“Excuse you, I am 163 years old!”
“No fighting on Halloween,” Olivia commanded, sweeping Morgan’s candy wrappers into the trash. “More people are coming soon. Hattie, put your movie on. I’ll order pizza.”
