Acer Macrophyllum or as you might know it, maple. More specific it's western soft maple or some call it red heart maple or even, Oregon maple. This particular piece is what is known as quilted figure. Other types of figure or chatoyance (if your a true wood nerd) are curly, flame, birds eye and good old fashioned burl. Maple has a tendency to attract mold during the course of its life which can stain the wood different colors which is known as spalted maple. The bumps you see in The top picture are what you would find under the bark on a quilted maple log. The bottom picture is that same piece cut and surfaced. You can see how the bubble effect transfers into the wood and creates a very three-dimensional illusion. This is one of my favorite types of figure that is not very common in maple. Only if the growing conditions are perfect does a maple tree produce quilted figure. Otherwise every maple tree would be quilted. #woodscience #woodworking #woodfromourhood #maple #quiltedmaple #wood #oregon #portland #acermacrophyllum #ilovetrees
