Heaven
(In his nightmares, in the week following, when Dadan doesn’t let him leave his room (knows Ace doesn’t want to leave) and weaves patterns of protection around him, Ace dreams of bone. Bright, bleached, and coming down from the heavens, blotting out the sky and eating Ace whole. In his dreams, the deer has eyes of red fire, and its Ace’s heart that beats inside its empty rib cage.
When Ace opens up his own chest in his dreams, nothing is there but the golden ashes of his father’s legacy.
It hurts.)
Jagged
Dadan doesn’t comment on the levity in Ace’s step, nor the way faery dust trickles in his footsteps. At night, however, when Ace pretends to sleep and Dadan stops pretending not to care, her muttered protective spells extend to two instead of one, and are jagged and sharp instead of smooth and circular.
(Even Dadan knows to keep the circling force of Goa out.)
