AH I just saw your post saying that you read Thousand Splendid Suns and I got sO excited because I just finished!!! It was so beautifully written, honestly one of the best books i've read. I was wondering if you could rec other books??
Hey! I know right, isn’t it just perfect?!
Well if you haven’t already, definitely read The Kite Runner to fill the Hosseini void ;)
Here are some more books that I recommend:
Burial Rites by Hannah Kent - based on the true story of the last woman to be executed in Iceland; incredibly atmospheric and wonderful
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë - one of my favourite books! The setting is very atmospheric and the romance is my faveeee because it is inextricably linked to female empowerment
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller - another of my favourite books. Follows Achilles’ life from the perspective of his childhood friend Patroclus (a m/m romance may or may not bloom)
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood - dystopia exploring female oppression in a totalitarian state
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith - written in the form of diary entries; really funny and original
The Power by Naomi Alderman - another dystopia about female oppression (my review)
The Help by Kathryn Stockett - captures the racism that was prevalent in the southern states of America in 1950s-60s; really great story too
any of Jane Austen tbh
omgg so I just started reading Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, which is a Victorian crime with a hint of f/f romance I believe. It’s UTTERLY fab so far, with really gripping storytelling
Some YA
Rose Under Fire by Elizabeth Wein - about an American pilot in WW2 who is captured and taken to Ravensbrück, the women’s concentration camp
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - follows a young girl living in Nazi Germany
Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman - imagines a world where racism is reversed
