I guess I'm just expecting to wake up one day and for all my problems to be gone, and I'll just be better.
I have always drawn a distinction in between what is a difficulty and a disorder. I don't consider medicating for something until it is making it difficult to function in the world. I fully believe in using medication when needed, I have benefited greatly from antidepressants, anxiety and ADHD medications, however, I wasn't started on those until it became clear that I was not able to function, and that other therapies were not effective. It seems that our society no longer has a threshold for discomfort, and wants everything that isn't pleasant to just be fixed. When I see kids as young as 6 on ADHD medication, I wonder how do you tell that a kid that age has ADHD? Aren't all little kids hyper and unfocused? And, development differs from kid to kid. I was not medicated for ADHD until I was 12 and it became clear that I was not just delayed and that I could not function in a classroom. Anxiety is normal. A lot of people feel it, and it sucks. It only becomes a pathology when it makes you unable to function. I am not judging anybody's use of medication. I think everyone should do what works for them, but I think the issue of discomfort vs. disorder should be explored.
Do you ever think about swallowing and then you can't? I hate it and I hate anxiety.
