Mackenzie’s conception came as quite the surprise to Derek and Meredith, albeit a good one. The pregnancy was a little harder on Meredith, and there was a miscarriage scare, but Mackenzie made her way into the world nearly full-term, weighing a decent 8 pounds 10 ounces. 

Growing up in a house full of older siblings was fun for Kenzie, though there was also some chaos mixed in, much of it started by the youngest sibling herself. She learned from a young age how to push everyone’s buttons and often found herself doing so just to see how far she could go before she got into trouble. 

When she started school, the same trait passed over to there, and it was not uncommon for the girl to be sent to the principal’s office for one thing or another. By the time she reached her senior year of high school, she was barely maintaining a C+ average and had no plans to go to college upon graduation.

If it were up to her, she would lounge out at home all day, but her parents all but insisted since she wasn’t going to college that she at least get a job. With their help, she managed to get on working in the cafeteria at the hospital. It isn’t the greatest job, but she gets free food and she also gets to eavesdrop on conversations and learn the hospital’s gossip so she enjoys it well enough.
