The Upcoming: one of your films takes on a life of its own on the internet, I am not sure if you are aware. Free Fall. It’s still so much alive to people. Are there any news about the sequel?

Max: I can’t. I wish I could say something, but yeah, producer came to me and said it would happen but I don’t know. I am not against it. But I also like the ending of the first one. I always like open-ended, it gives room for fantasy, I like that.

Max’s thoughts on bullying - one of the main subjects in “Es geht um Luis”/“About Luis:

“I think that's a big aspect, when you’re a parent yourself - I'm also a father of a daughter - then you might not only have heard about this topic, but experienced it yourself. There aren't enough good films about it or ones that really do the topic justice.

I also like the fact that the child is never shown in the script, so what the child looks like or what really takes place is in the viewer's head.

And yes, it’s a bigger problem than just about bullying, there’s also society’s reaction to problems it can't solve or doesn't understand, so it always tries to find simple answers to complex questions. And not listening but quick to judge. Or you're either for me or against me. I think that's a phenomenon of our time, that there's a lot of polarisation and emotionalisation. People don't approach things rationally in order to solve them together. So it never ends.

I find the the scene where the mother, Conny, sums up everything very powerful. That is a social phenomenon, or rather something very human. It is a survival mechanism that you always seek protection from the strongest, and that creates a dynamic that leads to bullying, maybe?

Yes, part of this competitiveness also takes place in society. The obsession with self-optimisation. So we forget that everyone has weaknesses and everyone does something wrong sometimes. The important thing is to acknowledge and forgive. Also ask why, so you don’t just escape your responsibility. Look inside yourself and ask, why is that? Why do I feel this way? Why am I so sensitive or why do I react this way? If everyone would look after themselves a little more or be more mindful of themselves, I think everyone would benefit.”
