Prompt #30: Two Heads are Better than One
The cook was busy bustling away in the kitchen, trying to prepare dinner for the Aurifore household. Miss Charlotte was about late 50s but quite skilled in the kitchen. She had been on staff for the Aurifore family for at least fourteen summers now, having been hired around the time Lady Aurifore was due with the family's first child.
Miss Charlotte didn't miss a thing that went on in her kitchen. Especially two boys up to no good. But she was curious to see what the young lads were sneaking into the kitchen to do.
Lance peeked around the corner of the doorway. His four year old baby brother was clinging to his arm. They knew the cook had just made a fresh batch of cookies earlier in the day. Lance knew their mother would make sure they didn't see any of those cookies if she had her way. Their mother was like that. Rarely let them have any little rewards like a fresh baked cookie. Well Lance was always on his mother's bad side somehow. So he was determined to get one of those cookies anyways. If he was to get punished, at least he would get a cookie out of it. He'd make sure his baby brother got one too. If he had brought his sister though... She'd tattle on them.
Lance held his finger to his lips as he looked down at Loth. Slowly they crept into the kitchen and made their way towards the cookie jar. They ducked down out of sight when the cook turned to get more ingredients. They waited to continue till the cook was backing to readying dinner without obvious signs of turning again. Lance was trying to put some of his training to use as best as he could by watching cook's body for movement.
They waited at the end of the counter just opposite of the counter with the cookie jar. When it looked like Miss Charlotte was safely distracted, Lance lifted up his little brother. He placed Loth on his shoulders and pointed out to the cookie jar. It took them two attempts and a near miss of being caught but they managed to get the jar. Quickly they ducked down behind the safe counter to open the cookie jar for their prize.
"You do know you could have just asked me." Miss Charlotte teased the boys as she poked her head over the top of the counter to smile down at the lads. She'd caught them red handed with cookies halfway in their mouths. "Sneaky little boys."
She took the cookie jar from the pair but left them with one extra cookie each before putting the rest away. "Now shoo before you ruin your dinner and your mother suspects foul play."
