Killian Othden is a main character in the munâs fantasy novel, Fireborn. The story is set on a planet named Erse. Killian is from a kingdom named Cathail and lives in the capitol, Aureolin, with his mother, father, four brothers, and his cousins.Â
He is 20 years old at the beginning of the story. Killian is a little over seven feet tall, which is not unusual for his family. His skin tone is a warm fawn color and he has freckles on his cheeks and nose. His hair grows long, down to his hips and is a dark auburn. While he is strongly built, he is a terrible athlete and would much rather sit and read a book or work on his ideas.
Killian is written as a demisexual, demiromantic. Killian does not have a love interest at this time and is not interested in having a romantic relationship. Not so much because he does not want one, itâs just not on his radar at all. He does, however, sometimes think he would want children someday.Â
Ersians come of age at twenty, no matter their race. Some races, like the Vericlen and Naemmos, age slower than others. Killian is half Vericlen and half Naemmmos. (Fun fact, an Ersian year is equivalent to 10 Earth years)
Killian has been training in the Aureolin Guild of Engineers since he was thirteen. He apprenticed under Master Smith, Maegar Claedfyr, before that. Killian took and passed the test needed to become a Master of the Aureolin Guild as soon as he came of age. He is chief engineer of Solarian, the castle where his family lives.Â
Killian becomes a bit more scientific and more interested in engineering than he does at making swords or jewelry. He is considered a genius when it comes to math. Still, he has a very strong artistic urge which can be seen in the aesthetic of his work space and in his inventions. They are all pleasing to the eye as well as functional.
Most Vericlen and Naemmos are born with a set of abilities. Vericlen are more aligned with the elements of Erse where as the Naemmos possess abilities that align with the Cosmos. Some do not possess abilities and these are called the Anhum.Â
Killian has the ability to command the earth around him, especially metals. His voice causes seismic waves if it raises past a soft tone. For this reason, Killian rarely raises his voice. He wears a silver collar made of the Ersian metal Novisium around his neck to help negate the destructive quality of his voice.Â
He is the second born of King Damir Othden and Queen Orya Nahin. His oldest brother is Finn by two years. Curran is a year younger than Killian and Aidan is three years younger. The Dorians are Killianâs cousins. They are Cyrus, Zander, Zephyr, and Nyx. His half cousins are Neo and Cal Reiner. Killian has one nephew, Finnâs son, Aeon.
Killian is closest to his father as they both possess very similar abilities. Damir was also a blacksmith before he led a rebellion against the Sun King. As a child, Killian often watched his father work in his private forge. He preferred this to spending time with his peers who would only make fun of him for his height, clumsiness, and stutter. Damir often gave him small pieces of scrap and other projects to work with when Killian became old enough to handle tools. In the present day (in the story) Damir still works with Killian on his projects.Â
He is close with Finn as his oldest brother was always the one who defended him against anyone who tried to bully Killian. He, Finn, and Cy shared a room until they requested to have their own. Finn was the one who knew what Killian needed to Killian didnât have to speak much as a child. For this reason, Killian is now very protective of his older brother.Â
Aidan adores Killian. As far back as Killian can remember, Aidan was always tailing him. Aidan had no great gift for smithing, but he often helped Killian research new techniques.Â
Curran and Killian are like-minded. They are curious about the world around them and seek to figure it out. Neither of them like to wait to follow the rules and would rather learn by trial and error. They often argued over scientific principles.
Neo is the cousin he is closest to. Neo is four years older than Killian. They both have a mind for innovation and work together on Killianâs Guild projects, though Neo is not a Guild member. They became friends when Killian was 15. It was unintentional as Neo does not really âlikeâ his cousins and Killian preferred to work alone. Killian could feel that Neo was lonely and decided it was more important for his cousin to feel wanted than for Killian to work in silence.Â
Killian can be stubbornly quiet. He is prone to outbursting when pressures become too much. He has lost his cool more than once with Finn who tends to know exactly how to tease Killian. His brothers and cousins all say âitâs all fun and games until Killian loses his cool.â
He is known to become restless when an iea grabs hold and often becomes obsessive until the project is complete. Killian finds making friends outside of family difficult, but once he makes a friend, he is fiercely loyal.Â
Killian becomes nervous in front of crowds and does deal with some anxiety in general. His mother taught his how to fold paper animals to center his energy and focus on something other than what was worrying him. Killian has small, square pieces of paper on him at all times and his family knows when Killian is working through anxiety when they find his desk littered with paper creatures. Â
He is a kind soul. Even to those who once mocked him, Killian has never spoken ill of them. He has a gift for empathy that goes beyond simply understanding how someone feels. Emotions affect him deeply and he often hid when his parents argued. As an adult, Killian avoids conflict when possible. He loves animals and nature. Killian has a small mouse that has taken up residence in his workshop. Killian could never bear to get rid of it, so he allows it to stay and even leaves nibbles for it.
Killianâs main purpose is to make the world a better place. He has an innate need to create and make life easier for people of all walks of life. For this reason, the people love him, and they have dubbed him their âSilent Prince.â
