last song: Lies from the Chasing Lights album by The Saturdays, in a moment of nostalgia for British girl bands that i liked in university (which as it turns out was only The Saturdays lol)

favourite colour: i tell kids my favourite colour is rainbow because i generally like all of them. it’s easier to tell you that i’m not fond of most shades of orange.

currently watching: Six Feet Under by myself, The Wire and VEEP with my husband, Recess over Sunday morning coffee & bagels, The X-Files with a friend. very soon starting a rewatch of Gilmore Girls, for the fall vibes. i watch too much tv, perhaps.

last movie: Barbie in theatres (i love how much Barbie cries). Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. at home (like meeting a pen pal in person for the first time)

currently reading: Cosmoknights vol 2, a large variety of picture books for work, and Judy Blume (so many i haven’t read before!)

sweet/spicy/savoury: savoury, for that salty umami goodness

relationship status: not to be gross on your dash, but i’ve been with my best friend and favourite person for ten years and it is friggin great.

current obsession: overwhelmingly human (English) names for pets. one of my kid friends from work (my job is great) told me their turtle is named Vanessa.

last thing i googled: a Black Russian, to confirm that it is indeed a drink.

currently working on: oh, i always get inspired by songs, so i have loads of drafts that are just song lyrics with the phrase “this is about [these people], figure it out!!!” but one of those drafts is shaping itself into a pretty angsty hotchniss mess, as per usual. maybe no satisfying happy ending, either.

4. i went to a very small, very rural private christian school that was ill-equipped to handle me, an anxious and quiet but easily-excitable girl who was smart but tragically unmotivated (and in retrospect probably had adhd). i suspect my elementary school teachers were aggravated by me 50% of the time and hopefully appreciated my enthusiasm and positivity for the rest of it. i would like to think some of them would be unsurprised at my chosen career path (professional fun-haver for babies, children, and their caregivers). some of them are probably shocked i even have a job, and to those buckos i say 🖕🖕🖕

17. well, it’s currently fkn freezing and very snowy in my part of cananananada, so my most worn footwear are my winter boots. but barring the necessities of the weather, it’s my black leather boots with the chunky heel that i fondly refer to as my emily prentiss boots. they make me feel like a badass. second-most worn pair are my white keds. love me a basic sneaker that goes with dresses and jeans!

48. if i were a fruit, i suspect i would be a gooseberry. a little odd, a pleasant tangy sweetness, and banned in several American states! (I am not banned, but I could see myself being… unliked in some of the redder states.) also here’s a lil fun fact about the etymology of ‘gooseberry’ i just picked up from wikipedia: Gooseberry bush was 19th-century slang for pubic hair, and from this comes the saying that babies are "born under a gooseberry bush".

Reasons why you like/dislike your name: I hated my real name growing up as a kid because it's very biblical and boring, and then I got to highschool and it became one of the most popular baby names. But there are still not many of me *my* age, so I guess I'm still unique. I go by hancy here because it's a nice amalgam of my name and Nancy Drew, my personal hero and role model.
