I didn’t come up with it and I forgot where I saw the theory, but I subscribe to the headcanon that no, Katherine did not lose Nathan’s ashes.
Abaddon stole them.
They’re his now and he keeps them as his most prized trinket. They’re in the vents among a pile of his treasures. He hugs the jar to go to sleep sometimes. Maybe Katherine can have them back when Abaddon deems she has earned them. But Abaddon does not want to share. He has not told anyone he stole them and does not intend to. It’s the only way he can physically touch Nathan anymore and they mean more to him than he cares to admit.
Just the image of him sneaking into Katherine’s room while she’s sleeping, going up to the shelf, grabbing Nathan’s ashes, and going “mine” then skittering off 😭

Need Abaddon to break free from the Vessel specifically so that we can have Nathan going “aww, bud, your true form is as beautiful and adorable as I thought! That’s my son everybody!” and he’s staring up at a twenty foot tall shadowy monstrosity of limbs, claws, five mouths, and too many eyes, who leans down, opens a mouth full of sharp teeth dripping with acid and goes “Dad stoooop you’re embarrassing me!”
It’s a need not a want.

Abaddon dug the hole he was stuck in. And the first time, yeah, whatever, he dug a hole and got stuck in it while running amok, then Nathan found him. Who knows why, he’s Abaddon. That’s fine and normal.
but every other time, he dug that hole knowing Nathan would find him.
Imagine him looking for the perfect spot to dig, making sure the light hit him just right so when Nathan walked by, he’d see him, and just nestling down, knees to his chest, waiting.
Sometimes he guessed the timing perfectly and only had to wait a day or two.
Other times he was off, and sat waiting for weeks. I can only imagine the relief of finally seeing Nathan again.
He dug the hole to find Nathan i’m not crying you’re crying
and Nathan died knowing he’d be with Abaddon for the rest of eternity but never able to hold him again and he did that and this show is fucked up man 😭
