Abacus Training – IIVA
In reference to the vision of Women and Child Development Ministry to create a nation producing well nurtured and developed children for the society to ensure a ready source of mentally and physically enriched youth, focus should be driven towards a holistic brain development of children. Worldwide studies have proven that the first five years of a child’s life are the most important in terms of brain development and character building. The mathematics skill that is learnt at an early age in life directly go hand in hand with the brain development of an adult.“According to a recent study, it’s more of a reflection of childhood memory skills than of overall intelligence. Researchers looked at the brains of children as they completed math equations and saw the memory section is increasingly used more than counting sections as child ages. Unfortunately, failure to memorize math when young could affect child brain’s development and leave the child forever counting fingers and toes” Mathematics and Numeracy are essential in the development and enhancement of a child’s learning journey. Providing children with a range of excellent mathematical and numeric skills will support in their journey of becoming confident, capable and lifelong education. The foundation of basic numeracy can be remarkably laid by introducing Abacus Training in the teaching methods of maths.
Abacus &Brain Development In Early Childhood – Scope
Abacus – mental arithmetic, an arithmetic method based on the principles of abacus calculation which is one of the fastest ways of calculating and learning maths. Also called a counting board or calculating table, the first Chinese abacus was invented around 500 BC and the abacus that we use today is still widely used globally. After working on an abacus for a while, a virtual picture of the abacus is formed in the mind of a child, which means that the child will be able to perform calculations in his/her mind at a highly accelerated speed without a calculator.
Numerous Benefits of Abacus Training to a child:
Accelerates logical reasoning
Advances reflexes
Amplifies photographic memory
Betters endurance of stress and pressure
Furthers reading and writing skills
Boosts faster calculation skills
Builds stronger mental formation skills
Develops confidence and self-esteem
Enriches comprehension in maths
Fine-tunes mental visualisation skills
Heightens thinking ability
Hones concentration and observance
Improves problem-solving abilities
Provides a solid learning foundation for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Method:
Our brain has two hemispheres, the left brain and the right brain. About 95% of our children use only the left brain, which provides the ability to analyze information concerning languages and sound. But the right side of the brain, which is focused on thinking, creativity and integration of information, needs to be used and stimulated as well.
Learning to use the abacus can help develop this right brain/left brain integration. When children use both hands to move abacus beads in arithmetic calculations, it stimulates cells in both the right and left sides of the brain. This results in quick, balanced whole brain development, leading to greater mental capacity. Using the abacus, a child can do all arithmetic calculations up to 10 digits without relying on an electronic calculator.
Abacus training can also show remarkable results in mentally disabled students in terms of Dyslexia and can even produce results in a visually impaired student.
Organisational Profile
Indian Institute of Vedic Maths (IIVA) is the only Govt Certified Indian Institute which provides training of Vedic Maths and Abacus training to school children, individuals, teachers, etc. for their future benefits. Sharing a legacy of 10 years, IIVA has become the apex body in imparting Abacus education worldwide. IIVA takes pride in sharing some facts, like,
– Taught abacus over more than 400000 students at the school level – Delivering 100,000+ seminars for teachers and parents – Have helped more than 50,000 students to come out of mathematics phobia through Vedic Maths and so on.
Project Proposal Under the umbrella of ICDS, Anganwadi Services Schemes& General grant-in-aid scheme for assistance to voluntary organisations in the field of women and child development, the step can be initiated to introduce the study of Abacus training as an integral part of Early Childhood Children Education. Due to lack of awareness, private & commercial approach of the subject tutors and expensive nature of the subject have made the availability of the same in the hands of few. Abacus training is till now considered as a luxury subject and the benefit is limited in the hands of limited beneficiary depending on the affordability. Being the pioneer in spreading awareness of Abacus training and generating lakhs of Abacus skilled students at the school level, IIVA is in all terms capable of joining hands with the government in spreading the Abacus education in all over India and to make the subject reachable for every child irrespective of their financial and geographical limitations.
