vampiric astronauts in NASA are fondly referred to as the Knocks. This is both a shortening/malforming of “noc crew” which itself it short for their actual title, “nocturnal crew” and a clever pun re: “what goes bump in the night”

#most space agencies only have a handful of vampires on staff just because of how rare vampires are #and how secluded/secretive many of them still are #there’s not a secret society going it’s just that for most of history the only vampires stories were told about were the vicious ones #and they were counted as devils and demons and such #not. exactly welcoming #aapm #other orgs prob have dif names but IDK enough about dif cultures/dif space agencies to do that. yet.

how do you determine citizenship for someone old enough that the nation they were born in no longer exists

#and do you need to be a citizen to join nasa as an astronaut. asking for me and this vamp fic #and how do you like. prove that #djskfkskdjsj I think that any vampire old enough to not be able to prove where they were born gets to pick any country #and becomes a citizen of that country no questions asked #aapm #like. what if a vampire was born in what is now Canada before it was settled #do they get citizenship based on where the country is now?#all of these questions have very unfortunate colonial implications

trying to figure out what kind of career path a vampire could take to get an end job as Literal Interstellar Astronaut at NASA is.... wild

#they’re basically a live-in maintience crew that doesn’t need to eat or breathe or sleep or keep warm #that will also live forever #so the qualifications needed are a) know how fix ship b) be willing c) patience #and I’m thinking that like. the last two came first.#find someone lonely enough and patient enoug and driven enough to survive the trip #and then train ‘em up #AV may or may not have a pilot’s licence but they have flown a Lot of different planes #not bc they like flying. they don’t. but because it’s a way to get out there #aapm #this is also. the more boring less publicized mission of the couple #the one everyone is crazy about is a Mars launch with 4 humans and 2 knocks on board #humans are in a cryo-ish situation and the vamps are there as backup #unfortunately for AV their mission is slow and boring and will take a REALLY long time #so the media doesn’t care as much after the first month after launch.

i am just. looking up the histories of long distance communication and mail and cartography, bc i figure that’s as good a place to start as any, because i already know AV is going to be.... That, in their past, at least. They’re an explorer and a traveler on the longest roads possible.
