Me, anticipating having an actual weekend off and all the writing im gonna do
first real crushes awww what babes pt 2
the third time cole checked the book out from the library, lottie became suspicious.
yes, she and cole were huge nerds. they knew this and accepted it. and yes, they were slightly obessed with the history of that big recent war with what’s-his-face. they were foreign, okay? everyone they went to school with was either sick of hearing of it or sad about it because their parents or their grandparents had fought or died or been tortured in the name of blood purity. cole and lottie? their parents were safe in america, doing whatever stupid teenage things teenagers did at that time, while poor hp and co were being big damn heroes. the girls had barely heard of the war before they moved to scotland, so they were more than a little curious. also, their joke dad had personal losses in the fighting and so it made it a little personal for them, so they were always collecting more information about what exactly had happened.
so cole checking out that history of the war was perfectly understandable. twice, sure, maybe she needed to reference it again. but three times in a month? no way. something was up.
so lottie stole it. naturally.
--
“no cole, i haven’t seen it. really! did you leave it down in the charms corridor when we were talking to flitwick about levitation and propulsion charms? you took your notebook out of your bag then, maybe it fell out?”
“ay dios mio, i hope so. if i can’t find this book i am literally dead. here lies 13 year old nicolasa, remember me fondly.”
“go check, i’ll do another search here.” lottie smiled a little as her friend dashed off. when the door to their dormitory closed, lottie started counting. at 100, she skipped to her hiding spot in her trunk (false compartment, reads the scar from a scratch on her left wrist to open) and took out the book. it was very lucky for her that she and cole both had a habit of using sticky notes to mark things in books that they deemed important, so she was able to flip around to see what cole had stickied.
which seemed to overwhelmingly be one remus j. lupin. every mention, every picture, every footnote. and oh BOY, the sticky notes on the picture pages had little hearts on them. giggling, she closed the compartment and her trunk and waited.
---
“lottie you FOUND IT OH MY GOD I’M GOING TO HUG YOU-” cole broke off and stared, eyes narrowing, at her friend.
“yeah,” lottie attempted, going for nonchalance, “it was, umm, under your bed behind your shoes and-”
“ya already, carly, you can’t lie to me. so. why did you take my book?” cole said, glaring.
“well you see, bestie boo, maybe i also wanted to gaze adoringly at remus j. lupin.”
lottie smirked when cole turned bright red.
“okay lottie, look-” “oh no, you just hold on one minute. you give me crap 100% of the time about liking professor longbottom, who is, yes i know, way older than me and married, but cole, you like a man who is literally dead. let me bask in the good news that i am not the most ridiculous person in this room.”
“oh shut up. lupin is a war hero-” “so’s professor longbottom!” “-i said shut UP, and tragic, and a nice person to look at, and oh YA ALREADY I CAN’T DEAL WITH YOU BEING SMUG!”
lottie giggled to herself as cole stomped into the bathroom, muttering another ay dios mio under her breath.
----
for christmas, lottie got an encyclopedia of flower language and cole recieved a framed picture and official biography of remus lupin. it was hard to tell which of the girls laughed harder.
