the 1975 got banned from malaysia last night bc matty healy & ross macdonald kissed on stage at a festival there & then made a speech against their anti lgbt laws. and that sounds great in theory! but in reality lgbt malaysians are now like, “hey, we’re scared of the backlash this will cause, we feel like we’re in danger, what if this hurts local advocacy efforts?”
and it’s just so fucking annoying that these two white straight men can barge in, do whatever they want to get that viral twitter moment, and then be on a flight back to england four hours later while the people they claimed to be fighting for have to deal with the consequences. did they even consider lgbt malayasians at all when they did this? bc it doesn’t feel like it!
and now their bird brained stans are all over twitter like, “revolution is never safe! if you want change, you have to take risks!” and it’s all white westerners who have never stepped foot in a country where it’s illegal for them to exist. y’all are so privileged!! i’m not malaysian but i am pakistani - another muslim country where it’s illegal to be lgbt - and i really do not know how to explain the feeling to people who have never felt it. and i live in the usa, i have dual citizenship, i am never going to be stuck there. but so many malaysians are! and these white straight guys just screwed them over and immediately fucked off on what? a whim while visibly drunk on stage? is this a joke to you?
