A silver parachute drifts slowly to the ground. A small box is attached with a note from mentor Glitter Caulder. Inside is a half-full canteen. The note reads: “Be careful."
Desperate to find food, because the salty water plucked holes in her stomach and she wasn’t used to the art of starvation, Regan had entered the dining room for the first time since the avoxes turned on them and threw away all that they owned rightfully after conquering the Cornucopia. She entered almost sheepishly, but there was nothing she had to be afraid of, after all. The ship looked abandoned and nothing like the glamorous cruise heaven they’d all stepped into. Regan had to see it coming, but she couldn’t.
Searching under every chair - for she was willing to eat even something less than sanitary, found on the wet floor that almost made her bare feet slip with every step - and behind the altered pieces of furniture, she had to realize that there was no hope. The only result of her searches was a fork, caught in a table’s leg, but she didn’t know what to do with a stupid fork. At least if it were a kitchen knife...
The blonde threw it away where she found it, endlessly ungrateful to the bone and not creative enough to make poetry out of every sharp thing she could get her hands on. When the situation took the bleakest color possible, the familiar beep cut through the silence and her chin raised instinctively to welcome the sponsor gift. She nodded and almost looked meak, as she could envision something tasty coming out of that box. Quickly reading the message, she nodded derisively and left it on the table, to focus on her reward.
She opened the box with hope, after the disillusion she faced, seeing everything broken and wet and nothing in order and functional - as if what she was expecting was functional avox robots like in the first days, eager to make her an omelette. Yet, her reaction poured out every gram of hope and turned it into disappoint and disinterest. “More water,” she made a grimace, ungrateful to the bone although deep down, she had to be aware that the water would be the most precious resource in a few, when she got over the taste of drowning and became thirsty again.
