In the Phineas and Ferb episode Toy to the World, I think Candace is being exploited at her job! She says "This is not worth $3.50 an hour". It's true that, in the US, workers under 20 can be paid a "sub-minimum wage" of for the first 90 days they work. However, since its inception, the sub-minimum wage has been set to $4.25 an hour. I can't find any reason that a teenager working as a toy seller would be allowed to make less than that.
Homework questions:
When the sub-minimum wage was enacted, the minimum wage was $4.50. Why hasn't the sub-minimum wage kept pace with the minimum wage?
Why are "federal criminal investigators" exempt from the minimum wage?
