Chapter One || Chapter Two || Chapter Three || Chapter Four || Chapter Five || Chapter Six
A Gravity Falls fanfiction based on the Same Coin theory created by @renmorris and @dubsdeedubs! Knowing about the theory isnât necessary to read this. Takes place postâfinale. Long time no update! I did kind of leave the last chapter on a cliff hanger then ignored this fic for months⌠whoops. Oh well, back in action now!
He knew it hadnât been there before.
Stan paused at the edge of the clearing, staring at the small swingset, creaking slightly. The fading sunlight leaking through the trees caught on the rusted bars, giving an almost flickering, flame color. Heâd walked through this way a couple times before while searching for the journal those thirty years, and there had been nothing. Now there was a swingset that looked like it had been there forever. Looking down at his hands, he hesitated. That hadnât come from him, had it?
He walked over, brushing his hands across the old faded frame. A few loose grains of sand were on the wooden seats, and two small names scratched in with an old pocket knife. He wasnât sure whether to be angrier with himself or comforted.
Sitting down in one of the swings, he rocked back and forth slightly, closing his eyes. He paused, holding his hand outstretched, as if to shake with someone. Hesitant, he curled his fingers into a tight fist, lowering it as his shoulderâs slumped.
âI donât think this was here before.â Stan didnât turn around as Dipper stepped out of the trees. Striding over, he climbed into the other swing. Stan kept his eyes turned away, but he could feel the kidâs eyes burning holes into the back of his neck.
âWhereâs Mabel? Sheâs probably worried about you.â
Dipper swung back and forth quietly, chewing the tip of his thumb. âBack at the shack. Sheâs pretty... sheâs pretty shooken up about everything. Wendyâs with her. Soos, Ford and I were all looking for you,â he said. There was a long stretch of quiet between them. There was no silenceâbirds twittered, the wind blew, the swings creaked softly.
âWhy didnât you tell us?â
Stan looked down at his hands, taking a deep breath. âI didnât know... not at first. I didnât want to hurt any of you. I thought I could just leave orâsomething. I shouldnât be here. You shouldnât be talking to me.â
Dipper kicked his feet into the earth, stopping himself. âYouâre wrong.â Finally, Stan looked up. To his surprise, Dipper was biting his lip, tears in her eyes. âYouâre still our family. It really freaked us out when you just walked off into the woods. Iâitâs weird, and Iâm mad you didnât tell us, but youâre still our grunkle. Youâre still a good person.â
Stan forced a small smile. âYâknow, the hardest thing is I... I donât really want to be a good person. And I donât mean shopâlifting and lying, Iâve always done that. I mean...â he looked towards the sunset, the fake smile slipping away. âI donât want the hurt I went through to be anyoneâs punishment. I...â he clenched his teeth, hoping Dipper wouldnât see the tears in his eyes. âI finally did something good in my life. I finally did something right. I donât want that to be his redemption. He doesnât deserve it. He hurt Ford, he hurt you, your sisterâhe was going to kill you guys!â
âBut youâre different!â Dipper said fiercely, pushing to his feet. âLast summer, you told me what it means to be a manâto do whatâs right even when no one agrees with you. Maybe you donât agree, but I think youâre a good person! Grunkle Stan, I donât care about any of this. I mean, I do, but I care about you more! You have to come home!â
Stan chuckled slightly, shaking his head. âYouâve really grown up, huh? LâListen, Iâll come back for three days. If things work out, maybeââ
âTwo weeks,â Dipper interrupts firmly. âThereâs no way three days would be enough. Mabel and I have to leave in a little more than that. You have to stay at least that long so we can prove it doesnât matter.â
Straightening up, he nodded, hesitantly. âFine. Itâs a deal,â he said, holding out his hand to shake on it.
Dipper, however, flinched back, shoving his hands into the pockets of his vest. âCould we maybe just... do a verbal agreement,â he asked, looking a bit hesitant. âIâd rather not... yâknow.â
Stan paused, quickly closing his hand. Heâd only meant it as a turn of phrase, hadnât even given it a thought. ââCourse, right. I was justâjust, never mind about that.â He could feel it in his bones that this was a bad idea. If he hurt his family, heâd... he wasnât sure what heâd do. But he couldnât bring himself to say no. It was only two weeks. He hadnât promised to stay forever.
Coughing awkwardly, Dipper pushed past the swingset, looking back to make sure Stan was following. They walked through the forest quietly, their awkward silence broken only by birds arguing in the trees overhead.
âStan?â
âYeah, kid?â
Dipper stole a glance at Grunkle Stan, biting his lip. âSo what is... âthis?â I mean... I sort of get it, but, maybe it could help to know more? Did it start afterââ
âNo, no, it wasnât the whole erasing thing,â Stan interrupted. âI mean, not exactly. I still donât understand all of it, yâknow? Itâs all been coming kind of slow but...â he paused, lifting his glasses so he could rub his eyes, squinting at the sunlight shining through the trees. âEver since it all ended last summer, my memories have been coming back fine. Except... thereâs been these extra ones. Ones that arenât mine. Memories of places Iâve never been and things Iâve never done. Except I have been those places. Dipper, IâI have done those things. Really, really bad things.â Stan paused, a spacey look in his eyes. He let out a long, tired breath, slumping down on a fallen log.
âThe worst thing is, I keep getting this feeling. This feeling that itâs all familiar, that itâs always been there. Ever since finding out... Iâve felt more and more sure that itâs not just him inside me. It feels like he is me. Maybe he always has been.â
Dipper chewed his lip, holding his wrist. His face was hidden in the shadows when he looked away. âWeâll figure something out,â he said, his voice flat and weak.
But what was there to figure out? Â What had been done was done, and changing it was as easy as sailing through a storm.
