A soldier was singing, the sonorous timbre filtering in through her open doorway. Sage looked up when she first heard the noise but relaxed back into her bed - a book an extension of her hand and the monopoly of her attention. The sun danced with the distant melody and when the voice cut out suddenly, the light remained constant in its heated siege against the wards of the laboratory.

The brunette paid no mind to to the lack of white noise, she salivated over the last page of her book before tossing the used paperback onto her stack of other books in the corner of her room, a satisfied sigh the only break in the usual hum of the day. It was midday, the forest hot enough to spontaneously catch fire in the stifling heat alone.
