I never intended to work in medicine, I kind of accidentally ended up here.

But as part of my training I had a secondment to cardiology and that made me realise the direction I wanted to take my career.

As part of it I saw the amazing work done with open heart surgery.

The fact we can stop and start a heart while it is repaired was just amazing to see.

And working on babies and small children with equipment so small and complex it always amazes me.

When I got the chance I specialised in cardiology.

Working as part of a team in a cardiac catheter lab to perform angioplasty pacing and other specialists cardiac procedures.

Being called in at anytime when covering emergencies 24/7 for people who suffer heart attacks.

The vast majority of the time we stabilise and repair the damage.

Occasionally we can't and that always hurts.

But we are a team and we are there and support each other throughout and the letters and cards of thanks from people who realised we changed the outcome of their life and gave them a second chance always make me feel that we really do make a difference to the world around us.

Is this my dream job?

I don't honestly know, I never intended to be where I am now, leading a group of specialists operators in a multidisciplinary team in a complex, physically and mentally demanding healtcare environment with ever chaging political forces driving it. But its what drives me to get up every day, new advancements in equipment and techniques and research always fascinate me. I may not do this forever but it will take a lot to equal saving lives and mending broken hearts.

When I posted my purple Friday shots @astrogurlnikkipinkai suggested I may need a wrap to keep my shoulders warm, don't worry Nikki, a quick change of jumper and everything is good, this one will keep my neck nice and warm too.

Hmm maybe a little something while I wait.

Nope still peckish maybe just one roll.
