#95of365 Daily Practice Reminders Responding mindfully to discomfort makes all the difference So much of our engagement, enjoyment, and fulfillment in life hinges upon how we work with emotional discomfort. The quality of our lives is shaped by how we respond to anxiety, fear, boredom, craving, frustration, restlessness, self-doubt, resentment, anger, sadness, jealousy, shame, guilt, grief, confusion, regret. When we were young we developed survival habits for dealing with discomfort. We now generalize these habits to all kinds of uncomfortable situations. Some of these responses are aligned with our goals and values and some work against them. Our job as adults is to look honestly and compassionately at the ways we deal with discomfort and let go of the ones that don't work. We can develop strategies for working with discomfort that support the goals, commitments, and relationships we value. This takes practice. We will fail more than we succeed. When this happens, we accept responsibility, learn from it, and begin again. That's all.
