Back in the 90s I received a Nintendo Gameboy for Christmas - my first games console that was entirely my own. Needless to say it brought me thousands of hours of joy and had me eating through AA batteries thick and fast. The only disappointing thing is that I asked for a red one, but that disappointment soon lifted once I started playing games, content and stupidly pleased with the fact I didn't have to let my siblings have a turn once an hour was up.
My Gameboy came with a free Nintendo wallet, which was fantastic! Even though I was a kid and didn't really have any need for a wallet (I had no debit or credit cards, let alone hard cash beyond some coppers), I still treasured it for years to come. So many years in fact, that only this month - November 2019 - have I put it into retirement.
It aches me so, because even though a Velcro wallet screams a certain "resistant to sex" charm, it was compact, had room for all cards I acquired over the years (yay adulthood and cards!), and served its purpose so brilliantly. But now, after some twenty-odd years of hard service, having travelled with me across the world to show how resistant I am to the idea of growing up, and shedding most of it’s original skin (the Nintendo logo is long faded too), I have decided to grow up. Needless to say I am sad to lose a buddy - but I won’t cry, because that’s not what a grown up does, right?
