The Groove Mix, 90.5FM WWCU, Isaiah Ford
On the Air: Isaiah "Ike" Shedrick FordFeb 29, 2016 Ā | Ā Written by Ronald Davia Ā |

Ā Ā In the Cullowhee Valley, simply due to our geography and our general location in the state, we do not have the most flavorful musical selections to choose from on the radio waves. It is actually not even possible to listen to something as essential as National Public Radio in Cullowhee via the standard FM radio. With this being the case, we can are thankful for Power 90.5, WWCU FM bringing many great shows to the air.
Ā Ā Students, sometimes faculty or even just Western Carolina University campus employees will host many of the shows that are broadcasted at the station. Among the broadcasting talent at the station is Southwestern Community College student and Burger Studio employee on campus, Isaiah āIkeā Shedrick Ford. Ā
Ā Ā āI have two radio shows, one called āWhee Talk Exclusiveā, which is on Mondays 6 ā 8 p.m., and thatās with my co-host David Johnson, we call him āDJā on the radio. I also have another show on Fridays called the Groove Mix on Friday from 8 ā 10 p.m., and thatās just myself, and whoever else wants to come on to open for guests and everybody. This is my second year broadcasting. ā
Ā Ā Ikeās Groove Mix is a live, engaging, multifaceted show that has an incredibly refreshing hip-hop and R&B track list every week, consists of deep guided discussion about pop-culture, music, news, and relevant topics to collegiate and campus life. This show even has a live call-in feature, where you can call in to the station on your phone and contribute to the discussion thatās happening at the time. This line can also be used for requests.
Ā Ā When asked of influences and reasons to why he started studying Communication and Broadcasting, Ikeās come from various places in the entertainment world.
Ā Ā āI have to say my influences are comedy, music, and my dad, a passion for sports. I wanted to be around entertainment, so Communication was the way to go, I like to talk, and Iām very musically inclined with different things that I hear. I have been behind the mic my whole life. Itās right that I focus on Communication,ā he said.
Ā Ā When asked of his major broadcasting influences and general inspirational figures, Ike has a broad range of people he looks toward for ideals and guidance in life and profession.
Ā Ā āOh man, thereās so many. So many. Iād have to say some of my influences are Kendrick Lamar, of course my dad, Cory Holcombe, Will Smith, Bernie Mac and Iād have to say, Kobe Bryant,ā he said.
Ā Ā Ike touched on something essential to hook in an audience in the field.
Ā Ā āIn radio you have to have a certain personality, tell a story, and have the audience actually be able to see what youāre talking about. You have to be able to relate to multiple different audiences,ā he said.
Ā Ā When asked if he had any classical musical training on instruments, Ike could not justify with saying that he did, although he did have minimal experience.
Ā Ā āI only touched one instrument in my whole life, and that is the piano. I only really know one song on the piano. But other than that, Iāve been in front of the microphone, or behind the scene, but just recently I picked up a new talent with cutting, and editing, and mixing songs and everything like that. Thatās really to come soon as far, increasing my radio DJ arsenal in that aspect. Because with the field of communication, itās a competition, you have to do whatever you can to stand out,ā he said.
Ā Ā Ike was born and grew up in Charlotte, NC. He attended Victory Christian Center for High School. Through his grade and high school career, he had no audio projects, broadcasting thoughts or communication ambitions at all.
Ā Ā āI was into sports. I had every black kids dream, trying to make it to the NBA. I had hoop dreams, but then it all changed after high school, when I didnāt get a scholarship for basketball. Then I looked at psychology, but psychology wasnāt āmeā. Communications was āmeā. There are moments in my middle school and high school career that I did realize I enjoyed being in front of the mic, the TV, and I realized that when I won the talent show in fifth grade. My talent was rapping. I canāt remember what the rhyme was about but I won it man!ā Ike chuckled while talking about his early life. āIt was at a church so it wasnāt anything too bad. Maybe it would be about Basketball? Nonsense.ā
Ā Ā When asked of a 5-year plan for the future, Ike has some very specific, tangible goals to meet.
Ā Ā āHonestly, I want to start out in radio, then I want to go into television. I want to have my own talk show. Kind of like Arsenio Hallās or similar. Where Iām interviewing celebrities and everything, although I hope to be one myself. When that all happens, I want it to happen on MTV. MTV is the most diverse television network. Diversity is key. We live in such diverse culture,ā he said.
Ā Ā Ike admires HOT 90.7 and the Breakfast Club in regards to radio.
Ā Ā When asked of incoming projects, Ike stated āIn due time, in mid-march, the Whee will get to hear some of my mixes.ā
Ā Ā He intends to move to Texas, Florida, or California after working radio in Charlotte, NC, at āthe QCā after graduating from SCC.
Ā Ā If thereās one thing he would like to convey in life, itās āKeep God Firstā.
Ā Ā Ike added āIām thankful for my mom and dad.ā
Tune in to his radio shows on Mondays (āWhee Talk Exclusiveā) from 6 ā 8 p.m. and Fridays (āGroove Mixā) from 8 ā 10 p.m. You can reach Ike via telephone from 8 ā 10 p.m. on the Groove Mix at (828) 227-7173.
