Paragraphs on Internet Safety
1. (Use a strong password) You should always use a strong password, unless you want someone to hack into your account. Strong passwords are really good for securing your e-mails, youtube accounts, social media accounts, etc.. To ensure that you are making a nice and STRONG password, you should always use numbers, capital letters, and symbols. Most of the time when creating a password, there will be a bar indicating the strength of your password. A good password is always an excellent way of keeping your possessions safe and secure.
Remember, ALWAYS KEEP YOUR PASSWORD TO YOURSELF! Never ever share your password, you can’t even tell your mother, siblings, other relatives, or even your boyfriend/girlfriend. Most importantly, whenever anything asks you for your password, DON’T give them your password!!!! Only keep your password to yourself to ensure your safety. Last piece of advice, don’t use the same password for everything you have.
2. (Back your computer regularly) You should always back up your computer regularly. Backing up your computer is a great way to keep the things you love stored on your computer in a safe place. Do you have a lot of stuff saved on your computer? Would it be devastating to lose all that stuff saved on your computer? If you backup your computer, all that information will be saved if anything bad ever happens to it.
Backing up your computer is an amazing way to save the loving information on your computer. There are many ways to backup your computer. One of those ways is to save it in a cloud. You aren’t literally storing information in a cloud, but you’re saving it incase you lose it later. Another way is to store in a dropbox, and you can also share this information with others.
3. (Keep your software up to date) Always keep your software up to date. This is super important because it makes sure that there are no gaps in your computer's security by solving software issues. It is also important because there are downloadable applications such as Java that requires updates every now and then to get the best experience possible from Java. This means that whenever you get a pop-up for an update, you should click YES instead of no.
For me personally, I make sure to keep up my Java and Adobe Flash Player to be able to experience the best from websites such as Youtube and Pandora. I always make sure to click yes to any of these updates so my computer doesn’t run into any problems with old software. I mean, who wants to go to a webpage and see that you need the latest version of Adobe to use it? That can be really frustrating. So next time you see a pop up saying click this to update whatever, make sure you click YES (this is super important)!
4. (Don’t click on links within emails) Have you ever gotten a link within an email saying, “click this ad for $100”? Well, they are NEVER good. Links within emails from people you have never met just spells “Don’t click on me I’m bad”. You should always stay clear of these types of emails if you ever run into them. Don’t even click on them if it’s from someone you know, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Say you recieve an email from a name that you’ve never seen before. Do you open the email to check what it is, or do you just leave it and eventually delete it? Unless you are really desperate, you would click it. If you aren’t desperate and you’re smart, you would know to avoid these types of emails. The main idea here is to not click those links! Chances are, they’re bad for your computer. If you get one of these emails just delete it and move on with your wonderful life please.
5. (Know what you are downloading) You should always know what you are downloading. Downloading random applications could lead to quite a few problems such as a virus, worms, etc. If you are downloading something, make sure that it’s from a reliable source. Another choice is if other people have downloaded it and know that there are no negative effects that could affect your computer. Just a precaution, know what you are downloading!
A good example of a reliable source to download from is Google. For an example, if you want to download Google Chrome, it’ll ask you if you want to download Chrome and it’ll say that this software was made by Google Inc. An example of downloading something that others have downloaded are MMO’s. Many other gamers have downloaded those games and they have pretty much guaranteed that it’s safe to download. Now you are informed that others have tested it and know that it’s not dangerous! Just know that you are downloading from a reliable source, or you’re downloading from a source that many others have downloaded and proven are safe.
6. (Use Symantec Antivirus, don’t add another antivirus) This basically means that you should only have ONE antivirus, not two. The reason you don’t have two antiviruses is because each antivirus will recognize the other antivirus as a virus. So basically, they will try to get rid of each other, which will never happen. Next, having two antiviruses will cause your computer to have quite a few problems. Lastly, this is probably the most boring fight there could ever be in history. Keep in mind, do not have two antiviruses!
To make it easier on you, just do not have two antiviruses. It’ll make your life a lot easier to just have one. Listening to this piece of advice will keep your computer safer. Oh, and if you want an interesting fight to watch, don’t watch two antiviruses fight. You should watch something like WWE or a Marvel movie if you like watching fights.
7. (Use a pop-up blocker) A pop-up blocker refers to an applications or software that stops popups. Pop-up blockers are super useful for those annoying websites that always have those random advertisements that pop up. Now of course you can’t trust any of those pop-ups, so don’t click them! Unless, it’s something from a local business that actually seems real. Wait, no! Just don’t click on those pop-ups to ensure your computer's safety!
Have you ever gone on a website that had so many pop-ups that it becomes really annoying? To be honest, even one pop-up can be super annoying. Well if you use a pop-up blocker, all of those annoying pop-ups will disappear! See, pop-up blockers already sound super useful, huh? Well now you know that you can get a pop-up blocker!
8. (Use a firewall) Do you shop online or use an online bank? If you do, make sure that your firewall is on! There are many threats when using the internet such as hackers and Trojan Horses (referring to the Greeks invasion to enter the city of Troy to win the Trojan War). You never know when one of those potential threats could be attacking your pc right now. This could also lead to fraud and theft from your bank accounts, and nobody wants that.
So what do you do, you use a firewall! It’s the best way to ensure security on your computer. A firewall works as a barrier or shield between your pc and the internet (or cyberspace, whatever you prefer). When connected to the internet, you are not only constantly sending information, but you are also receiving information. Main idea here, KEEP YOUR FIREWALL ON!
