Thomas Alan “Tom” Waits (born December 7, 1949) is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor. Waits has a distinctive voice, described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding “like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car.” With this trademark growl, his incorporation of pre-rock music styles such as blues, jazz, and vaudeville, and experimental tendencies verging on industrial music, Waits has built up a distinctive musical persona. He has worked as a composer for movies and musical plays and has acted in supporting roles in films, including Mystery Men and Bram Stoker’s Dracula; he also starred in the 1986 film Down by Law. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his soundtrack work on One from the Heart.

Waits’ lyrics frequently present atmospheric portraits of grotesque, often seedy characters and places—although he has also shown a penchant for more conventional ballads. He has a cult following and has influenced subsequent songwriters despite having little radio or music video support. His songs are best-known through cover versions by more commercial artists: “Jersey Girl”, performed by Bruce Springsteen, “Ol’ ‘55”, performed by the Eagles, and “Downtown Train”, performed by Rod Stewart. Although Waits’ albums have met with mixed commercial success in his native United States, they have occasionally achieved gold album sales status in other countries. He has been nominated for a number of major music awards and has won Grammy Awards for two albums, Bone Machine and Mule Variations. In 2011, Waits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Josh Ritter (born October 21, 1976) is an Idaho singer-songwriter, guitarist and author who performs and records with The Royal City Band. Ritter is known for his distinctive Americana style and narrative lyrics. In 2006 he was named one of the “100 Greatest Living Songwriters” by Paste.

A year and a half after recording his debut Josh Ritter, Ritter recorded his second album Golden Age of Radio for $1000 and self-published it. The song “Me & Jiggs” was subsequently released as a single in Ireland, where Ritter was quickly becoming a word-of-mouth success, first opening for The Frames, then headlining his own shows. Ritter’s third record, Hello Starling, produced by former Frames guitarist Dave Odlum, debuted at No. 2 on the Irish charts

In 2006, Ritter released his fourth album The Animal Years. 2006 also saw the release of Ritter’s first full-length live album and DVD In The Dark - Live at Vicar Street which was recorded over two nights in May 2006. Ritter released his fifth album, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter, in 2007. Both The Animal Years and Historical Conquests received warm critical reception with Stephen King calling The Animal Years the best album of 2006 in his column for Entertainment Weekly.

Ritter’s sixth album, So Runs the World Away, was released May 4, 2010 worldwide. The Beast in Its Tracks is the seventh full-length studio album

Hot Chip is a British electronic music band from London, formed in 2000. They have released five studio albums—Coming on Strong, The Warning, Made in the Dark, One Life Stand and In Our Heads. The group has been nominated for a Grammy as well as the Mercury Prize.

Australian icons Midnight Oil originally formed as Farm way back in 1972. They released their debut eponymous album in November 1978, and their first single “Run by Night” followed in December.

Through a long and distinguished career, the band became known for its driving hard-rock sound, intense live performances and political activism, particularly in aid of anti-nuclear, environmentalist and indigenous causes. Thirteen of the band’s albums made the Top 10 Australian album charts. Midnight Oil won eleven ARIA Awards during its career, including induction into the Hall of Fame in 2006.

Nicholas Payton (born September 26, 1973) is a trumpet player and multi-instrumentalist and Grammy Award winner from New Orleans, Louisiana. He is also a prolific and provocative writer who comments on a multitude of subjects, including music, race, politics, and life in America.

One of his most notable pieces to date, On Why Jazz isn’t Cool Anymore, describes the effects of cultural colonization on music.

After seven albums on Verve, Payton signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing Sonic Trance, his first album on the new label, in 2003. In 2004, he became a founding member of the SF Jazz Collective. In 2008, Payton joined The Blue Note 7, a septet formed in honor of the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records. In 2011, Payton also recorded and released Bitches, a love narrative on which he played every instrument, sang, and wrote all of the music.
