like slick-lidded eyes snaking upwards, she draws the gaze in graphite; soft, crumbling mineral to fake the sharp architecture of her body. she sings a litany to this brutal church, a gothic triumph and we bend in soft supplication to her wrought iron spine alabaster bone corded steel muscle skin of granite, sweat like glass and the cutting hardness of a cold fingertip against paper flipping through classifieds looking for her next assignment. we choral answer, a gasp like bronze bells ringing out thrumming with the energy felt when we glimpse her while waiting on the train. she trips through, skipping along the edge of our collective eyesight, a sweet trick of light glinting against metal. we cannot catch her full-on, so we sketch the idea of her into the corners of notebooks thumbed down hard and through and oh, sad accident, smear the sharp edges of her fervor. you cannot recreate a god you can only build a monument.
