The album on the boy's lap is typical of the cases that housed the shellac records of the time, which rotated at 78 rpm. They could hold only a few minutes of music per side, and a song was sometimes split between the two sides of the disc. Originally they were issued singly, but record companies noticed that consumers were storing them in photo album-like cases, and began to follow suit.

I've discovered a ton of great music from this station! They're ad-free, and broadcasting 24/7 from Longyearbyen, Norway. They also have a good amount of non-English language stuff too. Do be warned: since they play shellac from 1902-1952, some problematic stuff does occasionally make it's way in.
Matthew Rivera: The Apostle of Shellac
There is hope in the world, setting politics aside for the moment, in the ranks of young jazz fans who collect, research and listen to jazz that were first issued on 78 RPM recordings. One such person is Matthew Rivera, who hosts radio programs dedicated to the medium on WKCR and is host of a New York Hot Club; he tells his story to Michael Steinman for The Syncopated Times.
