so it turns out the 75px animated dashboard thumbnails are just a code trick tumblr has implemented*.  specifically, take the image url for, say, morpheus is fighting neo:

and replace the _500 at the end, where 500 represents 500 pixels wide, and replace that with _75sq, where etc etc.

any gif on tumblr, now you have a tiny instagrammatical animated thumb that you can mms on your android phone and suchlike.  or just make a grid of all my gifs, six across (75 x 6 >> 450px), in a single post.
