Day 241 - Sunday 7th September
I wonder how I am still here, my days are rolling into one long arduous panic stricken struggle. My body is not working properly, I don’t have an appetite. I can’t seem to produce saliva anymore. Oona’s bottom has wet seeping pustules all over it and looks so sore. Bathed her and let her bottom dry and get some air but she keep having diahrrea all over the absorbent mat so I slathered orabase on her and put a nappy on as she desperately needed to sleep. Asked the nurse to swab her as it looks vicious and infected. They haven’t grown anything from the bloody mint sauce poo sample on Friday. Her bloods from last nights show that her heamoglobin levels are 9.1 which is low and the nurse thinks that perhaps they will discuss a blood transfusion this week. Yesterday they did reduce the feeds back down to 40ml per kilo (15ml bottle) as of Wednesdays increase up to 50ml per kilo (20ml bottle). I don’t know if it was reaching her tolerance threshold or her line breaking that has pushed her body to its limits. But she has had a knock and it has set her back in terms of health, energy levels and development.
Wondering if she needs to go nil-by-mouth to prevent her bum from causing a blood infection. We don’t want to end up back in Intensive care again with her central line having to be taken out. O’s neighbour is back from her 2 weeks of tests at GOSH confirming she defo has pseudo obstruction. But at least she has made it to 1years, is a good size, can stand, crawl, chatter and drinks bottles of 50ml! Shes on full TPN but is condensed to 12hrs at night. She has grown well on TPN, as many kids do, but not O. I would love Oona to get to that point in 4 months but it’s not likely. Comparison only makes us sad.. and I try not to compare and just get a context for O’s progression. But sometimes when things aren’t going so well it reminds me of how fragile all this is. I cannot take for granted that she is alive as she is still fully dependent of intravenous nutrition and has a high risk of septicimia and is only just 11lbs.
is it possible..
to loose 5kg in 2 weeks... I don't know but I sure am going to try!!!
