#42 Lounge at the Public 5/21 10:30pm
Ambiance: This is the kind of place I’m not usually drawn to; tony couches and black dress cocktail waitress with a backlit bar and portraits of creepy ladies with beer cans or bubble wrap. I later came to find out it was called The Library. Experience: I had nice conversation with my sis and her coworker but that prob skews things. The wait staff was chipper yet aloof. A cool-running vent kept bartender (she basically admitted) from checking on us. Drink: The Moscow Mule was well mixed, but I deduct a bajillion points for being served in a glass and not copper. I followed with Basil Hayden’s with some ice. Apparently the ice was $9. Final Rating: Man if if I had to meet a high class prostitute...
#43 Emporium 3/23 3:00
Ambiance: For a fine Saturday afternoon it was not rowdy, but could see how it could get rowdy. We did get our fair share of Wicker Park dudes in suits. I'm not sure who wears a suit on a Saturday when it's not your wedding. It was one of the first nice pre-spring days. Maybe these guys were on their SuitSpringa.
A classic long bar with tin ceiling and shared tables. Apparently you can call ahead to reserve a table.
Experience: Awesome selection of classic games but would love more pinball. I enjoyed playing AC/DC and Transformers games. Apart from those they have Budweiser Tapper, Golden Axe, and one my favorites Rampage.
Drink: A great selection of beers, of which I sipped Rogue Irish, Lakefront Bridge Burner, and Bells Smitten. I think the heavy gravity of Bridge Burner erase the tasting notes from mind, which means they were all probably pretty good.
Final Rating: I'd go here any afternoon or early evening to hang out and burn through $10 of quarters. I might even plan a man/nerd outing here. Nerdez-vous perhaps?
#44 Blue Line 3/23 12:50p
Ambiance: This is a classy wood panel, tile and chrome joint. And by classy you could also see it as classic, given the location, it probably was diner back in the day. Early Saturday pre-lunch it's populated by relaxed neighborhood folk under the El. The tunes are Doors to Beatles "Yellow Submarine."
Experience: It's a pretty slick hangout kinda place on a Saturday morning. That's a sure thing in my book if I'm in the neighborhood.
Drink: A nice selection of beers. I chose Six Point Brownstone. It has a nice balance malt and bitter and plenty of kick.
Final Rating: This was a great place to set up an early rendez-vous before other adventures in Buck-er Park. I would set up more meetings there for sure. Let's call it a Rendez-joint.
