So, my plan was to go take a shower before bed, but then it got past 9:30 after talking to my parents and siblings. So now I'm just gonna make a list of things I need to do in the morning before we leave for Billings at 9am.
Shower
Coffee
Put Game Of Thrones, audio books, and music on my phone
Collect art stuff: pens, colouring book, sketch book, etc
Grab spare change of clothes
Load car with overnight bags
Feed critters?

I fucking despise seeing anything related to cancer, particularly breast cancer awareness BULLSHIT. (I have a soapbox dedicated to the lie that is âbreast cancer awareness.â) But the one thing that seems to be okay for me is the Fuck Cancer tag.
Cancer is such a touchy topic for me because I am incredibly over all of the âWeâre praying for you!â and âOh, Iâm so sorry.â Like... people just. donât. get it. And then thereâs this whole other aspect of dealing with cancer that has to do with the patientâs caregivers that no one ever seems to talk about. Thereâs so much support from friends, family, and medical professionals, but rarely do you ever hear the story from the perspective of the caregivers.
I have been incredibly lucky to have the support group of friends that I have this time around. Not once have I ever felt belittled or judged for having some of my more... unsympathetic feelings towards my mother when talking to them. Itâs when people who donât really know me try to come in and offer hollow words of comfort. Things like, âOh yeah, my brother-in-lawâs step sisterâs cousin had cancer once, so I know what youâre going through.â
Guess what? No you donât. Your words donât mean shit. But your actions sure as hell do. My family has seen who our true friends are through every medical crisis weâve had in the past 4ish years. Theyâre the people who make a point of visiting/calling in between the Facebook updates, the ones that send food/food vouchers, the people that offer to come clean your house while a family member is in the hospital and you have a sinus infection. Most of all, itâs the people who are willing to offer their shoulder in place of their condolences, despite the fact that it inconveniences them.
All of that being said, every time I see something related to cancer, like a commercial for chemo or a breast cancer awareness ad, it feels absolutely trivial, trite, worthless, and pandering. I am not a victim of a disease and neither is my mother. I am simply in a perpetual state of crisis and stress. The big differentiation there is that a victim is someone who has experienced trauma in the past, where as, with cancer, itâs an every day struggle of new and exciting forms of torment and problem solving. One day, my dad was laying next to his sick wife in bed, and then the next he was having to book a plan ticket for his daughter to come and help write a living will for her. And I donât think people get that.
For anyone who doesnât see it daily, cancer is something they can forget about and revisit. Itâs easy for them to take 2 seconds out of their day to offer up âHope youâre feeling better!â on Facebook. But for us on the front line, our entire lives are dictated by cancer. My weekly grocery list, my weekly and monthly schedule, when I take a shower, when I go to bed, how many hours Iâm able to commit to a job, what I say, what errands I run when and where are all dictated by cancer. And it is So Much. Anyhoo, back to the original point. I donât actually hate the Fuck Cancer tag as much I was afraid I would because it seems to be full of people in similar situations as me and my family. Either patients or caretakers. When I have enough spoons, I might go through it a bit more and read about peopleâs stories and self care strategies.
