You wanted to want to be here.
You liked the vacation rental fine, and the company was warm. Freeing. But you wanted real liberation, even if it meant nothing. And not in the philosophical sense.Â
The feeling never went away. Seungmin squeezed it out of you sometimes, but it usually took a lot of fatigue or sweet talk to feel comfortable in your own skin, let alone his arms. But his arms were all you had. The closest to heaven youâd gotten.Â
Heâd been there to watch all your scars turn white. He never gave up on you, even when they kept coming; until you were marked enough that if you wanted to leave the house, youâd have to cover your legs in something opaque enough to stop the eyes. He never treated you like you were attention seeking or crazy, even if heâd never understand. But even still, the scars kept coming. And the more you let him in, the more you looked the other way.Â
Because you didnât deserve him.
-
You laughed. And it wasnât forced this time.
You held a delicious shrimp between your teeth, holding back a chuckle as you smiled at Seungmin. You had bitten it without taking the shell off the end, and you smirked, blushing as he peeled it for you. He laughed, adding to the warmth filling the room.
Everyone was having a good time. Stray Kids got a week for vacation, away from even the eyes of their TV program.Â
You had a plan. You were going to be happy this week. You were miserable last week; never leaving your bed and relapsing daily. Seungmin wasnât really babying you anymore because it had become routine. He also hadnât fucked you all week, considering your state. So this week when you werenât sulky or sleep-deprived as you had consistently been, he and the other members thought a miracle had come, when in reality, it was the opposite. But none of them needed you around, so maybe it would be for the best if you eased the burden that was you.
Seungmin kept a gentle hand resting on your thigh at the table. It stung. But it was so much better than nothing. You leaned your head on shoulder, feeling his body wobble your head as he laughed, softly, as he always did. He would keep writing songs for you, forever, you thought.
He momentarily turned his attention away from the others. âYou okay?â He asked, hushed and more saying it because he had to than anything. You faced him and raised your hand to press against his cheek, which was warm. âYeah,â you whispered. You pecked his lips, savoring the taste.
-
It was the last night of vacation.
-
You werenât scared of death. You were scared of yourself. You were scared you would hurt everyone, and scared that nothing could hurt you anymore, when emotion had always been such a primary part of you. You were honestly scared that no matter how perfect your life could get, it would never suffice because you hated yourself. And if you hate yourself, could you really love your life if itâs yours?
But that was the stuff you couldnât share. Not even if you wanted to; the words were too hard. You were done dissecting your mind like you were back in therapy. For the past while youâd more so focused on trying not to cut yourself and trying to live. But sometimes trying to live meant cutting yourself.Â
But you were tired.
-
When night fell, and some lingered while others went off to bed, you went to the room. Seungmin was still chatting with his friends in the main room. You sat on your shared mattress and grabbed his pillow, bringing it to your face to just breathe him in, inhale his scent like it would save you. You accidentally shed a tear onto the plush. He was the one thing that had kept you here this long. His soft, patient love that you'd searched for your whole life.
You eventually stood and trudged over to the dresser, eyes lidded and glassy. You grasped the little pill bottle that was laying there. You exited the room and took the back door to go outside.Â
Maybe he didnât know how serious it was. And though your previous pride wouldâve hindered this thoughtâyou were dependent.
He was so fucking vague. Maybe because you kept telling him you wanted to live, being so convincing and half believing it too, he didnât worry about anything past the self harm. What else could he do? He had to work. And with the demanding performances came practice. Dieting. The gym. Considering the demands, he isn't meant to have time for a girlfriend. Let alone a ticking time bomb.
But he didnât know. He had a clue, sure, but he didnât know.
You shed a few more tears, a bit delirious now from the fog in your vision and the wine, of course. You walked into the backyard the group hadnât yet explored. You were so happy tonight. For real.
Holding the bottle in your left hand, you grabbed your phone from your pocket with your right. You opened your messages and with shaky hands began to text Seungmin. Sorry for everything. I really love you. Truly.Â
And you thought youâd stop there, but you just kept typing in a blur, writing everything youâd felt for him in a paragraph like this was the hardest thing in your life.
âI still do believe youâd healed me.â
-
Seungmin had left his phone on the kitchen island.Â
He had said goodnight to everyone already, and went into the bedroom to get ready for bed. He wondered where you were. As he brushed his teeth, he kept thinking to himself how good it was to see you smile at dinner. You deserved to smile, to eat good food.Â
After lotions and everything, he went back to the bedroom. He checked on top of the dresser for his sleeping pills, finding them gone.Â
-
Chan and Jeongin were having a little chat by the sink, chuckling about something funny only they noticed at dinner that night. The air was warm.
Then your boyfriendâs phone buzzed.
Chan glanced at it and picked it up, about to call out to Seungmin from the other room that he got a text, when he saw the last message notification pop up.Â
âThis is not a breakup, but goodbye.â
âUm..â Chanâs heart rate picked up in seconds. âSeungmin..â
He set the phone down. âSeungmin!â He yelled.
Racing out of his bedroom with panicked eyes was your boyfriend.
âFind your girlfriend, now,â Chan commanded, and Seungmin already knew.
âC-Can you get some of the boys to check for her too? Check the frontâŚâ Seungmin's skin was burning.
Chan nodded while Seungmin wasted no time and ran out back.
â[name]!â He screamed, racing in and past every spot surrounding the house, his vision dying from the oncoming tears. You flinched at the sound, staying silent behind the bush where you hid. Eight sleeping pills were still stuck in your throat after swallowing without water. You clutched the case tight as you cried quietly.
Running in circles around the house, Seungmin panted. â[name]!âÂ
He didnât care if it was useless.Â
He knew one of his members would get him if they found you inside, so he stayed out. It was cold. His skin was hot. He prayed that when he found you, yours would be too.
You buried your head into your knees, sobbing. Back to square one, you thought. Rock bottom. Youâd given up.Â
You weeped, salty tears flowing down your legs, catching your breath. You thought youâd be calmer here, one with nature and all that crap. But the misty night air was frostbiting, and you felt more hopeless than anything. You had this all wrong. It was scary.
You whimpered against your knee.
Seungminâs head shot up, hearing the sound coming from the yard, because it was completely silent out there. He made haste in that direction, face cold from the wind hitting his wet cheeks. He entered through the gateway, looked around and immediately, you were there in the corner, in the dark, small. Shy like when youâd first met. And there for any of them to find.
âNo..â you panicked, turning away.
He crouched down instantly and grabbed your shoulders, still impossibly gentle.Â
âDid you take them?â He asked.
You couldnât bring yourself to nod or lie. So you slowly met his eyes and just stared. Yours were glossy and defeated. Tired.
His hands moved to your cheeks. âOpen your mouthâŚâ he trembled. You reluctantly parted your lips and he tilted your head forward with his left hand while he pressed his fingers into your mouth. You mewled. He desperately shoved his fingers down your throat, making you gag. âCome on,â he pleaded. One pill had went down already. You were lightheaded when he finally triggered you.
The others came up.
You threw up onto his hand, gagging, coughing and sobbing. The pills came out not quite pill shaped, but not dissolved by a long shot.
You weakly hit him on his shoulders. âWhy..â
He ignored the aggression and pulled you in, holding your head and body, dirtying your clothes. He pressed his lips to your head, not moving for minutes. He gently rocked you back and forth. Silent.
I canât be with a girl like this, I have too much on my plate. Youâre a ticking time bomb! Is what I do never enough?â
That's what you expected.
But it never came.
Maybe expected was the wrong word. But youâd always braced for the worst. Youâd expected the worst to continue to come from your life. Decades went on and you felt the same. You loved everything but yourself, and the more that hate consumed you, the more it spread to all the things you loved.Â
No matter how perfect your life got.
Seungmin never pulled back.
âCan you let me go..?â You questioned, voice tiny against his shoulder.Â
âAre you sure?â
âYeahâŚâ
He slowly, so slowly, let his arms fall away. He saw your face, broken; your adorable, shiny eyes too shiny and too dead considering the life they gave him. âIâm..sorry," he whispered.
Your eyes widened. âNo, Iâm sorry. What are you sorry for?â
âI shouldâve known.â
You winced. It sounded harsher than it would ever imply. But It was true. He didnât know, and maybe if he didâŚ
âI couldâve done something. I wouldâve-â
âStop.â
He hated to think he couldnât keep you from suicide. But he hadnât.Â
âI-â he cracked. âI thought you were trying to live.â His voice was broken, not accusatory.
âI was...â
âWhen did you stop?â
You held your face in your hands.
âNo, no, Iâm sorry. I didnât mean it..â
You stayed obscured, crying. He let you, extending his clean hand to rub your head.
You began, âJust last week, I let the thoughts back in. I was relapsingâŚevery night.â
âNoâŚâ He hadnât seen you naked in a week. He hadnât seen the fresh cuts.
âI hit a vein. I-â your breath hitched. âI didnât panic..at all really. I handled it in the bathroom.â
You were a fucking mess.Â
â...Iâm gonna stay,â Seungmin whispered.
But all he ever did was admire you.
âThatâs all you do,â you mumbled. âStay.â
âBabyâŚplease donât do this again. I need you to stay too. I promise you Iâll make it..better than whateverâs on the other side.â
âThatâll take a lot of drugs.â
âPlease.â
Your eyes pricked again. You just let it stream.
Soaking your clothes, âI never..wanted to leave..â
He took you in his arms again. âDonât fake anything anymore. I wouldâve stayed behind for the trip at home, with you if youâd told me you had to.â
âYouâre just saying that because I almost died...âÂ
âStop pushing me away.â
You sniffled.Â
Crickets chirped. The grass swayed.Â
And after decades of seconds in his embrace,
â...Iâll stay.â
Whether that meant staying right there hugging him, staying the night, continuing to love him, or the most important stay of all; it squeezed his heart. Because it was a start.Â
Jisung ran out the back door into the garden to find you and Seungmin collapsed on your knees holding each other. âI called an ambulance,â he announced quietly. You lifted your head, shaking a bit. âI donât want to go to the hospitalâŚâ
âItâll be okay,â Seungmin reassured, patting your head, but never telling you to âshh,â even if it was instinct.
You wiped your tears. âIâll go for you..â you whispered to him.
Jisung left you two without many words, panicked himself. He surely couldnât handle this kind of thing. The guilt you felt toward the others started to catch up to you. You didnât wanna see them. You didnât want to see anybody. Anybody except Seungmin. He would keep you company. He would be quiet, like breathing.
-
You passed out.
-
"No...no no no," Seungmin whispered, suddenly supporting your head as it lolled to the side. If he wasn't religious, he was now. He prayed that you would stay alive. His right hand scrambled for you neck, pressing slightly on your pulse point. Your pulse was weak, but present. Hopefully you were just in deep sleep.
He took the ambulance with you after the paramedics carried you in, holding your hand the whole way, keeping it warm and maybe sweating a bit on your palms. You snored softly, and he filled with relief.
-
He cried silently on the ride to the hospital. It was brutal that you wanted to go so bad you would've let him or one of his friends discover you dead at the rental. Also devastating that it didn't take much convincing to let him save your life. Most suicide plans had a leak or two. Part of you, a very small part of you buried deep in your subconscious, wanted to be found. He tried not to think over why; he'd only hurt himself more.
Seungmin maybe wasn't babying you all the time anymore, but what you didn't know was that it was all killing him inside too.
When you arrived, they rolled you in on the stretcher, and you stayed sleeping as they transferred you to a bed. Seungmin stayed in the room. When you were responsive, you engaged in small talk like it was deep; discussing the same kinds of things Chan and Jeongin were when you texted Seungminâs phone.Â
His eyes were shining when he looked at you; like he was so proud of you, even when since the last time he looked like that, you had nothing to be proud of.
If you needed a reason to live, it would be for him. Not just for what he does for you. Not anymore.
But soon you realized. That look in his eyes wasnât pride. He didnât need a reason to look at you like thatâor a reason to be proud of you for that matter. The look was love. Hopefully youâd let yourself learn to identify it more easily.
The talk flew by, and you could even bring yourselves to chuckle. If todayâs distress ever came up, he never said anything like âstay alive, for me,â or âif you need help, here I am;' he was just present.Â
And now you knew you werenât alone.
âBut you had always known that.
