Almost finished the piece!
Progress for my 3D piece: I had trouble with finding a wooden structure to hold up four of my acrylic sheets. I figured I would just drill in the same patterns into one acrylic sheet for now. I'm hoping for gradex, I can implement the 4 planks.

[3d] crown shyness piece
for my 3d, I'm creating a layered 3d structure with plexiglass. The plexiglass will be engraved with a dremell tool, replicating the same look of crown shyness in trees while looking up from a FPP. I'm going to incorporate light into this structure so the carvings can shine through. Similar to how the light from the sun shines through the cracks of the trees.

"Crown shyness describes the phenomenon of a tree’s leaves withdrawing from the leaves of other trees. It results in beautiful webs of almost touching canopies, but why do trees do it?
There are a few theories for trees’ bashful growth patterns. Some believe that blowing wind causes branches to hit their near neighbours, causing damage to their leaves and buds, and as a result, trees then limit growth at these locations to avoid further damage." - McVean 2018
TAKEAWAY: Distance can be a learned response to damage, not a lack of connection. When space as intentional, boundaries are set in place. I feel like this can relate to humans in a way; how distance can develop not from something in particular, but from a learned need to protect oneself from potential harm.
