In short, I'd love to be a Surfacer at DreamWorks Animation. My degree is in Digital Arts, emphasis in Art Direction, so I'd love to later branch out to become an Art Director.
I've really fallen in love with Texture Art/Surfacing, whichever you prefer to call it. That's essentially turning a grey 3D model on the computer and painting it into the realistic/stylistic objects you see in the films. My university didn't have classes to specialize in this, so I've been studying on my own time.Â
I love both the surfacing and visual development departments and would jump at the chance to work in either. For now the plan is to get a job where I can and study on my own time, honing my skills so I can later apply as a Surfacer at DreamWorks. That's the number one spot in my heart right now. As an intern, they took very good care of me and I'd love to be a part of such a compassionate company.Â
And for anyone else that's interested in Visual Development, let me tell you this: Visual Development in itself is a very, very competitive field. DreamWorks Animation hired 5 visual development artists last year. Of the whole year. Just 5 people.Â
It's a competitive field, but so is everything that is wonderful in life. I just need to work hard and get that lucky break!Â
