Is there any act more meditative than opening a pomegranate and separating its arils, one by one?

over the first eight days, I shelled eight pomegranates, each aril told me something different a simple gesture a long-duration performance with oneself, at daybreak, by the window every day I shelled a pomegranate I removed, one by one, each of its arils I washed the pomegranate I reassembled the pomegranate I poured golden wax into it I watched the wax change from transparent to opaque I waited I removed it from the mould I discovered a shape a landscape fated to disappear.

In the exhibition Common Grounds, French artist Marine Froeliger invites us to explore impermanence and ever-changing landscapes.

Inspired by the fluidity of her native region’s shifting borders, Froeliger uses the volcano as a powerful symbol of transformation and resilience. Here, the volcano transcends its geological essence to embody the human experience, bearing witness to the cycles of destruction and creation that mirror our own lives and the artistic process.

Froeliger captures the turmoil of upheaval, the grace of renewal, and all the nuances in between, reflecting the psychological, social, and political changes we face today. The exhibition explores the concept of safe spaces in a changing world, examining how borders and landscapes are constantly being redefined. Froeliger’s use of impassable terrain becomes a poetic metaphor for finding harmony amidst chaos.

Her work—spanning performance, video, sculpture, drawing, writing and sound—reveals how stability can emerge from tension and transformation. Common Grounds encourages us to shift our perspective, to transcend static boundaries and to view them as dynamic, evolving spaces.

It reminds us that our shared experiences are not tied to fixed lines or historical shifts, but to our collective ability to adapt, to create and to find security amidst change. Here, she presents montage #1 of an endless film, accompanied by a live-improvised soundtrack. Through these artistic outbursts and the shifting landscapes depicted, we gain a deeper understanding of our own resilience, our capacity for renewal and our strength.
