A chapter full of references I should look up and am not going to!

I’m pretty sure Bahorel and Combeferre’s theatre discussion has been meta’d, if only because every scrap of dialog any of the amis have has been meta’d, but I don’t remember any of the context that said meta offered for the exchange. I know Combeferre’s duck thing has been meta’d but, again, I couldn’t tell you what it said.

Anyway, the point is that Marius is feeling overwhelmed by this whole thing. This is nothing like what he’s used to, on any level. And I feel for him, I really do. As a person who meant to go to a meeting the other day and got as far as poking my head through the door and realizing that the room was hot and full of strangers before turning around and bailing, I get that sense of being socially overwhelmed. Honestly kudos to Marius for not taking one look inside and just running away forever. (Again, when Marius is just Marius-ing along, I have a lot of sympathy for him! It’s just when you start involving other people, especially women people, that I have a hard time.)

And not only that, but he’d just started feeling secure in his opinions, had just had the confidence born of defying his grandfather and Taking A Position, and now he suddenly finds that position being rocked again. And I feel for him there too. He thinks he had it all figured out, he did all this research, he agonized about it for weeks, and now within days of finally taking his stand he comes across a whole new set of ideas he hadn’t even thought to consider.

I love the descriptions of Courfeyrac taking Marius under his wings and not asking him any questions. He asks him about his politics and then introduces him to the group. I really like that the way the amis are described is like a hornet’s nest. They are continually buzzing with opinions, whereas Marius had settled on one opinion, that of Bonapartism of his father and considered it absolute. The hornet’s nest analogy also helps explain his inner turbulence by staying in the company of these young people. He is seeing and absorbing many different ideas on several subjects.

Courfeyrac and Marius quickly become friends. One day, Courfeyrac asks Marius about his political beliefs, and Marius tells him that he’s a democrat-Bonapartist.

Marius starts chilling with Courfeyrac's friends. We get two sample conversations: Bahorel & Combeferre talking theater (the duck!) in a way that looks a lot like they're sympathetic to Hugo's set, and Enjolras rebuking Courfeyrac for joking about Rousseau to Marius. 

I sort of wonder whether Feuilly would agree with Enjolras or not. Enjolras defends Rousseau for choosing the people over his children, Feuilly is an abandoned child who chose the people having no other family.  

The whole 'Bonaparte'/'Napoléon'/'Buonaparte' distinction has political meaning IIRC, but other than Gillenormand's strongly-anti-emperor Royalist set using 'Buonaparte', I don't remember the exact connotations. I think the basic gist is that they don't especially like him, Enjolras most of all, and Prouvaire's a bit more chill.
