Brickclub: 3.3.8
You know, looking at the adults who raised him, you can totally see how Marius turned into the dramatic, weird about girls person that he did. Gillenormand is, if possible, an even bigger drama llama than Marius, if from a completely different subspecies, and Mlle Gillenormand probably unintentionally brought him up to believe that, like, seeing a womanās ankle was tantamount to ravishing her behind a bush. It doesnāt excuse Mariusā weirdness, but it absolutely explains it.
Anyway, so Theodule doesnāt tell on Marius, because Theodule respects the memory of the dead colonel enough to stay silent about something he knows will upset the Gillenormands. āHe retreated, leaving Marius alone in the cemetery, and there was discipline in this retreat. Death appeared to him with large epaulettes, and he almost gave it the military salute." Theodule is the kind of rich pretty boy whoās probably never had to learn or apply a single critical thinking skill in his entire life, but heās not bad people.
Unfortunately, Gillenormandās disrespect for other peopleās privacy extends to Marius, so Theodule staying quiet ultimately doesnāt matter. Gillenormand is very certain that nothing is more important than his own curiosity, because Gillenormand doesnāt believe that other people exist except for his pleasure. This is an extension of the, āhe never went anywhere he couldnāt dominate the sceneā thing. Marius doesnāt have a right to his secrets, because they inconvenience Gillenormand, and we canāt be having with that. Heās already established as the kind of person who thinks that taxation is theft, and now other people having secrets is ~oppressing his freedom.~ (Sidenote: no wonder Marius is so, so tight-lipped about everything after leaving. Itās the dual punch of having been trained to never give anything away to avoid piquing the old manās curiosity and the sudden realization that he actually can have secrets now.)
So Gillenormand and Marius fight about it, and given what we know about of these men it really could only go one way. Neither is going to back down, neither is going to compromise, neither is going to allow the insult leveled at them to go unanswered. So the only thing that could happen does, and Marius essentially goes, āI quit!ā and Gillenormand goes, āYou canāt quit because Iām firing you!ā and suddenly Marius is penniless and homeless, just like that.
(Also, we know Marius isnāt going to take the money, because a)many of us have read the book before and b)Marius is Marius, but I do wonder if heās right that Gillenormand would have used it as leverage over him if he had. I honestly am not sure which it would be. On the one hand, Gillenormand is absolutely the type to do that kind of thing, but on the other he is established as being selectively generous and not really including too many strings in that. So it would probably vacillate wildly depending on his mood.)
3.3.7
Iām so amused at Theoduleās description. Heās so much meant to be this pretty but vapid character compared to Marius, but like everyone else also mentioned, I too find him more interesting than Hugo intended. I also really like Mademoiselle Gillenormand and Hugo makes fun of her unnecessarily, calling her out to be hypocritical because she appears religious but is also fond of gossip and makes fun of her by saying that she had an idea as if it is a novelty with her. Of course, she is going to be curious about gossip living a very sedentary life without any interesting pursuits and opportunities for an old unmarried woman and has been raised in a home without love herself. Although part of me wishes Hugo had written her better, because I think she could be more than just someone to laugh at.Ā
But I do like all the snarky fun of this chapter and how Mademoiselle Gillenormand is fond of Theodule because they see each other so rarely, sometimes itās like that with distant relatives. A big part of me wishes Theodule had been raised with Marius together as kids, so that Marius could grow up less lonely since Theodule does seem to be taking Mariusā side with the aunt.
At any rate Theodule may be shallow and have his own affairs on the side which he does not mention to his aunt, but he really seems to be genuinely fond of her. There is that short dialogue between them that works so well for humour.Ā
While he does not want to, Theodule accepts Mademoiselle Gillenormandās request to spy on his cousin. He then promptly falls asleep and is not too much bothered about spying on him. Of course, it is a very Pontmercy thing that the sweetheart ends up turning into a grave- Marius is extremely goth and we end on a note of sadness.
3.3.8
Theodule still with his basic moral decency (more than Gillenormand ever had), pauses and gives his cousin some space in his moment of grief. As a lancer he has respect for the colonel and I still think it would have been so much better if the two children had been allowed to grow up together and learn from each other. He also hides Mariusā secret from the aunt and his great uncle.
Gillenormand who was going to question Marius instead spies on him and takes the letter from his room so he could have the answer to the gossip of where Marius is going to, instead of any genuine love or concern for him. He then confronts Marius about the title and very unfeelingly tells him his father was not worth knowing and calls him a traitor and coward.Ā
Marius does not know how to respond to him because he still respects his grandfather but hearing his father be insulted is too much and not knowing how to insult his grandfather he takes a different route. Ā
Obviously the āDown with Louis XVIIIā is hilarious as Marius is still out of touch with politics but the line has its effect.Ā
But honestly Gillenormand throwing Marius out over such a small thing is so annoying because he respects the nobility, who probably donāt care about him much, more than his own grandson or his daughter.Ā Ā
I really am glad that Marius is out of that house although poor Mademoiselle Gillenormand still has to suffer the wrath of her father as he addresses her as vous for three months.Ā Ā
And we leave the chapter with Marius facing an uncertain future which is a nice segue to a chapter on the political turmoil in the country. Ā

Marble Against Granite
ThƩodule decides not to write to his aunt about what he saw and respectfully retreats from the graveyard.
Marius returns home and is tired, so he takes his coat and the ribbon he wears around his neck off and goes to take a bath. His grandfather goes up to his room to greet him and finds the ribbon lying on the bed with a pendant hanging off it. He supposes that the pendant contains a portrait of the girl Marius has been sleeping with and takes it to his daughter. They find the letter that Mariusās father wrote to him on his deathbed instead. They also found the cards Marius had printed that say Le Baron Marius Pontmercy.
When Marius returns, his grandfather confronts him. Marius defends his father and, by association, the Republic. His grandfather insults the Republic and, by association, Mariusās father. Marius doesnāt want to offend his grandfather, but he cannot leave his father unavenged, so he denounces the Bourbons and Louis XVIII.Ā
His grandfather kicks him out of the house.
The next day, Gillenormand tells his daughter to send Marius an allowance every six months and to never speak of him again.
Marius gets into a carriage without knowing where heās going and rides away.
Brickclub Les Mis 3.3.8
In which the excrement hits the ventilation system.
Or rather the immoveable goth kidĀ melancholy Romantic hero gets hit by the unstoppable force of his nosy grandfather's prejudices.Ā
So, Marius gets home, and heads to the gym for a refreshing swim. Aunt and Grandpa snoop through his things because they're awful, and then it's messy fighting time when Marius gets home and Gramps confronts him about his father.
To fair to Marius, he is eloquent as f*ck. During a surprise confrontation, after 2 days without proper sleep, our disaster boy is calm and concise while defending his beliefs. He doesn't reproach Gillenormand and escalate the situation, but he also doesn't conceal his admiration for the Colonel or equivocate about the proof.Ā
I know Marius spends a lot of his upcoming page time wandering aimlessly, dreaming, pining, and/or making unfortunate choices in self-expression (the Napoleon speech, the handkerchief episode, the 15-page letter to Cosette), but here as a sheltered and neglected 17-year-old he is very capable. He arranges a lot of secret travel, does research (in the library and in the field), completely changes his political and social worldview, and is very eloquent when he stands up to his grandfather.Ā
Who is being the opposite of his thoughtful and mature grandson. It's been a good 20 years or so since Mlle G cheesed off her father by marrying Col P. She's been dead for 12-13 years. The colonel's been dead for months, and before that was powerless and penniless for over a decade. Gillenormand has already won, and unless there's a bunch of offscreen murder Hugo's neglecting to mention, Gillenormand really doesn't have any reason to hate these dead and defeated relatives so much in the first place, much less break with his only grandchild. He's just being a jerk.
I never know how to read the offered allowance: Gillenormand actually caring about Marius's well-being, or doubting that he can support himself, or trying to retain the upper hand and feel powerful... The 120 pistoles breaks down to about 200 francs/month* for Marius, which will keep him comfortably in student accomodations, and represents about 7.5% of his grandfather's annual income (though it is perhaps being paid from his aunt's funds rather that his grandfather's). In comparison, Marius as a translator earns ~700 francs/year, Feuilly earns about 930 francs/year, the allowance Marius is turning down is 1,200-5,760 francs/year, and Bahorel enjoys an allowance of 3,000 francs.
*I would assume that Gillenormand, 18th century avatar, is using the 1726 standardized value of the 'louis d'or' (coloquially called a 'pistole' after the similarly-valued Spanish coin) as 24 livres, though there was also a double version worth 48, and at other times the gold coin was worth only 10 silver livres. So, that 60 pistoles could look anywhere from 600 to 2,880 francs. Other sources seem to favor the intrepretation of 1 pistole ~ a weird way to say 10 francs, which is what I've used before. Either way, the offer is definitely enough to pay Marius's room, board, and school fees, with either a modest amount or a great deal of extra money for amusement, clothes, etc.
Gillenormand uses 'vous' forms towards his daughter and the maid. Marius gets 'tu' until the final sentence of Gillenormand's tirade, when he switches to vous forms ("If your [votre] father was among them...") which continue through the end of the chapter. The 'monsieur' and 'votre serviteur', I think, add a mocking formality to the whole thing, based on Marius's claim to the Colonel's title of baron, in addition to the change of pronouns showing a withdrawal of intimacy.
