I've harped before on how Les Mis shows so many forms of love (and other people have too it's a common theme) but I love how Hugo show's us that even the deepest love does not always bring happiness. And not in the way that Valjean risked prison in a desperate bid for his family to survive. Baron Pontmercy submitted himself to a very different kind of unhappiness. And in this case he knew that the success of his endeavor would bring him unhappiness.

And then also, the mention of unforseen casualties. "But [Baron Pontmercy] submitted to them, thinking that he was doing right and sacrificing himself alone." He resigned himself to his own unhappiness without realizing the depths of Marius' that would come from this decision. But can we blame a father for wanting the best for his son? Can we say that the decision was wrong? I truly don't know. And it's heartwrenching.

Lastly the contrast between Pontmercy's great exploits (which feel so grand as to be comical) and the quiet anguish of his furtive glimpses of his son:

“...and who walked across that beautiful stone bridge – which, with luck, will soon be succeeded by some hideous iron cable bridge...” Gosh Hugo, tell us how you really feel about modern architecture.

In other news, I am so glad to be reading about a character I like, even if it’s just for a brief interlude. And boy howdy do the Bishop parallels come back in full force. In many ways, Georges will become to Marius what Myriel is to Valjean -- a shining moral beacon showing him a new path. And, much like Valjean, Marius tends to, uh, adhere on the side of overkill when following that path. But we’ll get to that. For now, we have an old man with a worldly past tending his garden and finding solace in its beauty.

Unlike the Bishop, however, we get an exhaustive recap of Georges’ military career. He was brave and skilled and made quite a name for himself, and his loyalty to Napoleon eventually unmade everything he had accomplished in the eyes of the authorities. But Hugo, who loves himself a good moral principle -- see, the convent digression -- finds that just as honorable as the rest.

Georges Pontmercy is introduced to us as a completely different man to what the rumours in the salons were talking about him. What is said about men, does play a role in how they are thought of, indeed. 

He is a bent, aged old man with prematurely white hair- it does in some way remind me of Valjean and the way he was introduced as an ordinary traveller. It is interesting that he has been introduced to us, not in terms of his military achievements but through his cultivation of flowers and his relationship with the garden.
