I kada vani oblačan je dan, ja u sivilu neba osjećam sunčeve zrake, koje se, kao trake, omotavaju oko nas. I da kiša padne, nama ništa biti neće: Zaštićeni smo od svijeta u svom oblaku sreće. (kd)
I woke up this morning to a text from someone I went on a first date with last week:
“It’s been great getting to know you and I think you’re a really cool person,” it began, and with a start like this, you know it’s not going anywhere good. “But I think maybe we’d be better as friends. I do like you as a person and I wish I was feeling some spark, but I’m not.”
A month ago, I wrote about how I was ghosted by someone after our first date, and I wondered if maybe there’s something in my behaviour or the way I carry myself that’s making that happen.
The thing about this person from the text this morning is that I did not feel “some spark” either. But I did enjoy the time we spent together. I thought she was smart and funny. She expressed ideas I hadn’t considered before and we made each other laugh. I liked her grasp of language, how she communicated clearly and to the point. And I thought she was cute. There was something about the lack of any edges on her face that I find very pleasing to the eyes. And so I wanted to go on at least one more date with her -- maybe two -- to gather more data and see if there could be something there.
I believe the spark is dangerous and shouldn’t be trusted. At least for most of us. Because what the spark is, really, is just the pattern recognition system of your brain recognising something that it think you’d feel comfortable around. Someone that feels familiar. The thing is, they feel familiar precisely because there’s something about them that feels like previous relationships, even if you can’t pin-point what that is. The spark, essentially, is just a trigger for your attachment type. And for a lot of us, that’s not necessarily the criteria we should be following when choosing a partner.
My favourite scene from Lucky Number Slevin -- possibly the only scene I remember, to be honest -- is where The Rabbi, played by Ben Kingsley, was giving the horse speech to Slevin, played by Josh Hartnett:
The first time somebody calls you a horse, you punch him on the nose. The second time somebody calls you a horse, you call him a jerk. The third time somebody calls you a horse, well, perhaps it’s time to go shopping for a saddle.
I know that there’s nothing inherently wrong with me, but having these series of first dates that never lead to seconds -- one after the other -- is making me consider some serious questions about my self, my approach to dating, and my place in the world -- both literally and figuratively.
