The story follows Sergeant Kosugi, who is punished for striking a superior officer and reassigned to a remote outpost in China during the collapsing final phase of the war. There he serves under Captain Sakuma, a brutal and authoritarian commander.

Kosugi is placed in charge of transforming a former military band—a group of inexperienced, untrained young soldiers—into a functioning combat unit.
