I keep referencing this story of Charlie Kaufman running down the hill to illustrate how our experience with culture is primarily shaped by our collective life experience up to that point, and how when we revisit the same book, song, or movie later, we get to experience it differently because we are different. 

A while back, I read somewhere that reading a book -- even if you don’t remember it afterwards -- changes you in some fundamental ways that affects your reading of other books, or even that same book again. I’ve definitely experienced this personally while/after reading Guns, Germs, and Steel.

There’s this fear of rewatching movies you watched as a kid/when you were younger. And I personally haven’t watched anything from my childhood recently, but I watched Nick & Nora’s Infinite Playlist some months back and I was surprised at home average I found it. I used to think it was a straight up masterpiece. 

Kiss the Boy, by Keiynan Lonsdale, is a song that I fell in love with from the first time I heard it. There’s a part early on in the video involving a tongue and a hijabi that I think is one of the most adorable things captured on video ever. But even though I love the song much, listened to it so many times that it literally made it into my Spotify Top Songs of 2018, I never felt the song was about me. That is, until a few days ago when I listened to it for the first time with someone I liked, and it was like I was listening to it for the first time ever. And for the first time, it felt like my song. Nothing else felt more appropriate at that moment.
