I was texting with a friend earlier, and I said “sleep tight”. It occurred to me, probably for the first time, that I "sleep tight” sounds a bit weird. Makes me think of Mike Birbiglia having to sleep in a straitjacket. Although, given his condition, sleeping in a straitjacket is a net-positive, so there’s that.
Sometimes I encounter something I don’t know, make a mental note about not knowing, and then just never following that up again. But other times, I google.
Turns out, sleep tight exist pretty much because “tight” rhymes with “night”. Good night, sleep tight.
There’s the notion that “tight” also means solid and sound -- properly -- which implies that sleep tight just means sleep soundly. That may be true -- and it is -- but then consider the other sentence that usually follows sleep tight: Don’t let the bed bugs bite. It’s sheer nonsense. Like, who voluntarily lets bed bugs feed on them. Also, how much agency does one have while sound asleep?
“Don’t let the bed bugs bite” exist because bite rhymes with tight. Which follows that “sleep tight” is a thing only partially because of the various tight synonyms that make sense, but the bulk of the heavy lifting is being done by rhymes.
