Why I loved 200Columbus so much, this was one of the Volunteer events I had during the year of the Bicentennial. I volunteered at the 200Columbus Table. After my volunteer shift, I explored the sights of the Spring Edition of the Dispatch Home and Garden Show. Speaking of the Dispatch Home and Garden Show, there’s still time to check out the Virtual Show this weekend!

With Festival Season having been canceled this year, it’s fun to go through the vault for past festivals, such as the Independent’s Day Festival, which took place from 2008 to 2017. Independent’s Day showcased local bands, local artists, local makers, and the local creative, entrepreneurial, and independent spirit of Columbus. Here are highlights from the 2012 Festival, which was held during the City of Columbus’s Bicentennial Year, 2012.
DJBC Tumblr Fall Throwback Bonus - 60 Years of German Village Society: “Ode to Schiller” & Oktoberfest (Part 2)
During the greatness of 200Columbus the Bicentennial, there were community events across the city to showcase communities. German Village celebrated the rich history of Schiller Park in September 2012 with the illumination of the Friedrich Schiller Statue on a Saturday night, and then an afternoon celebrating the rich 150 year history of the Park on a Sunday afternoon, capped off with a German Village Family Photo taken by photographer Larry Hamill.
Did you know that Schiller Park... - Hosted the Ohio State Fair in 1864 and 1865. - Was home to (what eventually became) the Zoo in 1877. - The Statue of Friedrich Schiller was dedicated on July 4, 1891. - Schiller Park was temporarily renamed Washington Park in 1917, due to anti-German Sentiment during the first World War. - Hosted Oktoberfest from 1967 to 1972. - Has been home to Actors’ Theatre since 1982, performing classical works in the park every Summer (except for this one, but they performed Virtual Staged Readings almost every Monday night this Summer). - President Barack Obama held a Campaign Rally in Schiller Park in 2012.

Also in September 2012, President Barack Obama held a campaign rally on the stage of the Ampitheatre in Schiller Park, which had a line to get into the rally from blocks away (and then we raced back to the WCRS Studio to go on the air LIVE right after that).
