what happened in beatless?
What didnât?
quick ask what does it mean the final part of bakemono monster girl?
Basically, itâs just a very painful confirmation about the girl who was trying to expose the classâ bigotry to Antou fully understanding what was actually happening the whole time.
The entire story, Antouâs classmates dehumanize her existence by using her as misery porn: they prop her up only so they can feel good about ourselves. âOh, look at us, being so kind to the monster girl! Weâre suuuuch good people and wonderful people for loving Antou! Because nobody else would!â
They tolerate Antouâs monstrosity as long as itâs convenient to them. Because itâs tolerable to them as ânormalâ people. But when her physical âdeformityâ becomes too severe for them, they immediately retract their support and love.
Basically, Antouâs no longer useful to the class as misery porn, so sheâs not worth anything to them anymore. Out of sight, out of mind. The ugly freak isnât in the class anymore, so why bother pretending to care about her and build up her confidence? The girl that âantagonizesâ Antou admonishes the class for it, calling them out on their fake pity and fake friendship at Antouâs expense. She spends the whole manga trying to break Antouâs determination because she knows and understands itâs a temporary, fake thing that will hurt her horrifically once the illusion fades.
She figures by getting her to quit bothering for the sports festival, everyoneâs interest in her will fade much more quietly, as opposed to letting her feel a fake high and crash. Then she finally snaps herself.
Well, without much debate, Antou is thankful that for once somebody is being honest with her and not bullshitting to her face.
I think sheâs breaking down at the realization that she is actually is prejudiced towards Antouâs physical appearance like everyone else, and while she wasnât faking sympathy towards Antou, her disgusts were very much real. While her actions were âhelpingâ Antou much more than her fake friends, it was nontheless much more self-serving than she let on. It wasnât for Antouâs sake: she just hated watching people be nice to the freak and was covering it up with fake sympathies herself.
In the end, sheâs not really that much better than anyone else in her class, using Antou as a prop to make herself look good by pretending to actually care about her. By pretending to care about Antouâs well beingÂ
Sheâs finally understanding that sheâs just as bad as everyone else, just in a different, even more dishonest way at heart.
At least, thatâs how I view it. Sheâs breaking down at the realization that sheâs not really much better than anyone else around her.
I think thereâs a less cynical interpretation that sheâs just screaming what everyone else (not herself) has been wanting to scream at their beloved Recchan this whole time, and sheâs moreso just breaking down at the revelation that nothing changes. Despite her best efforts, Antou was still hurt and the class got what they wanted, and sheâs just crying and breaking down at how hopeless and pointless it all was and even now that sheâs finally been honest to Antou, it doesnât matter. Itâs far too late to change anything and all the honesty in the world wonât change the situation.
Personally? I never got the feeling she was sincerely looking out for Antouâs well-being as I read this. I think yelling at Antou calling her a monster is her own personal feelings spilling out, as opposed to the first page where she says the class should tell her to be honest. Itâs herself being honest with Antou about what she really thinks about her, and she can no longer pretend sheâs a good person who was looking out for Antouâs emotional wellbeing. She lied to herself about caring about Antou for a similar reason to everyone else, but somehow even more dishonest than those around her and sheâs just realizing her own hypocrisy and the reality sheâs arguably the worst of them all. But, that less cynical, less depressing interpretation is there I think.
