THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (1971)
"You ain't never gonna amount to nothin"
That one opening line set's up the entire theme of the film. The story begins with the introduction of the films main character Sonny. Sonny, along with his buddy Duane, are basically living the life. With high school graduation merely weeks away they are anxious to get their life moving. Unfortunately, they learn the hard way of how life often has other plans.
The film depicts the suffocating atmosphere of a small Texas town in the 1950's. The youths have nothing to do and nowhere to go. They are in every way invisible to the changing times of American society. The feeling of isolation is ever present in these youths. As the characters develop it becomes painfully evident that they are in dyer need of love.
The characters in this film should be painfully relatable to anyone and if they are not, than you at least know someone in your life you is reminiscent of them. The common theme throughout the film is the feeling of a hopeless fight against an inedible fate, promised only with repetition and mediocrity.
Towards the end of the film, when watching a football game at the same field he use to play at in high school, Sonny realises he doesn't have a place anymore. He lost all his good friends, his girl moved away to college and even the movie theather that evoked old memories of his high school days gets closed down. Yes, the film shows a small town slowly dying, but the main point is how this process turns the once young-spirited Sonny into a stranger in his own hometown.
